Onychia is an inflammation of the matrix surrounding tissue of the nail with formation of pus and shedding of the nail. Mild onychocryptosis can be treated by trimming and rounding the nail. More advanced cases are treated by surgically excising the in growing portion of the nail down to its bony origin . This surgery is called matrixectomy.

What is an Ingrowing toenail?
An in growing occurs when the side of the nail curves inwards. This grows to form a spike which then digs into the flesh at the side of the toe. This causes pain, swelling, and a low grade persistent infection.

Why does an Ingrowing toenail occur?
It occurs when you have a sweaty feet and wearing excessively tight or narrow shoes. Digging down into the side of the toe to clean the nails can also set off the process.

Symptoms
An ingrown toenail occurs when part of the nail curves into the flesh of the toe . It can occur on all toes but affects the big toe. If dirt and sweat enter the infected area that causes the skin of the nail to become red, swollen, and tender. A small amount of pus will come out of the edge.

Causes
Possible causes include:

Jamming your toes while playing sports like tennis. B Wearing tight fitting shoes.
Clipping toenails that the corners penetrate the skin as they grow out.
Being born with wider than average toenails.
