Kulhad Ki Kheer: Navratri Recipe

Navratri is here and Vasant or Chaitra Navratri is celebrated every year in the Vasanta Rhitu (beginning of summer that is March-April). Vasant means Spring whereas it is also called as Chaitra Navratri because it falls in the lunar month of Chaitra. It is one of the most popular and devoted Hindu festival. The nine nights of the holy festival is celebrated twice every year. Goddess Durga is worshiped and many devotees fast whole Navratri.

During Navratri, special delicacies are prepared. Non-vegetarian foods, onions and garlic are not used in the Hindu kitchens. But we all will agree that Hindu festivals are incomplete without desserts. So, here is a special Navratri dessert recipe to prepare. Kulhad ki kheer is a special and traditional dessert that is prepared with rice and milk and served in earthen pots. Check out this Navratri recipe.

Kulhad Ki Kheer: Navratri Recipe

Serves: 3-4
Preparation time: 10 minutes
Cooking time: 30-40 minutes

Ingredients

  • Milk- 1lt
  • Sugar- ½ cup
  • Rice- 5tbsp
  • Almonds- 7-8 (sliced)
  • Cashew nuts- 4-5 (halved)
  • Raisins- 3-4
  • Pistachios- 3-4 (sliced)
  • Cardamom powder- 1tsp
  • Saffron- few strands
  • Kulhad- 5-6 bowls

Procedure

  • Wash the rice in fresh water until clean. Soak in water and keep aside.
  • Wash the kulhads and soak them in water for 10 minutes.
  • In a deep bottomed pan, boil milk for 20-25 minutes on low flame.
  • When the milk thickens, add the soaked rice and mix well. Cook on low flame for 10 minutes. Stir at short intervals to allow even cooking.
  • Add sugar as per taste and mix well.
  • When the kheer thickens, add dry fruits namely cashew nuts, raisins, almonds, pistachios and cardamom powder.

Navratri special dessert, kulhad ki kheer is ready to eat. Pour in the kulhads and garnish with saffron strands and dry fruits. Serve hot.
