Moong Dal Dhokla: Low Fat Snack
When you are on diet, you always feel like munching on low calorie foods. Thinking which snacks are low in fat? Well there are many low fat snacks that you can have while dieting. Dhokla, fruit salad, idlis and momos are few classic examples of low fat snacks.
Dhokla is a staple Gujarati dish that is prepared for breakfast and is also known as a delicious and low calorie snack in other parts of the country. Rice, chickpeas and besan is used for a dhokla recipe The main ingredients of a dhokla recipe are besan and curd. However, have you tried the moong dal dhokla recipe at home? Commonly known as moong dal dhokli in Rajasthan, this snack is prepared with moong dal (split yellow gram), chana dal (Bengal gram) and spices. Want to try this yummy low fat snack at home? Ingredients
- Moong dal- 1 cup (soaked overnight)
- Chana dal or besan- 1tbsp
- Green chillies- 3-4
- Coriander seeds- 1tsp
- Curd- 2tbsp
- Turmeric powder- 1tsp
- Salt- as per taste
- Baking soda- ½ tsp
- Oil- 1tsp
- For tempering
- Oil- 1½ tbsp
- Mustard seeds- 1tsp
- Red chilli powder- 1tsp
- Curry leaves- 7-8
- Green chillies- 2 (finely chopped)
Procedure
- Wash the soaked moong dal and then grind it with green chillies and salt without using much water. To get a semi-liquid consistency, use very less water. Grind into a smooth paste.
- Pour in a bowl. Add besan, curd, coriander seeds, turmeric powder and sprinkle baking soda.
- Grease a dhokla steaming pan or an 1 inch broad thali with oil. Now pour the ground paste into it and spread the paste evenly into the pan/thali.
- In a double boiler method, steam the pan/thali for 25-30 minutes. Double boiler is a method in which a huge deep bottom pan is filled with 1-2 inch water. Then another small bowl or pan is placed with support to steam the dish inside the huge one.
- Check at intervals to see if the dhokla is prepared or not. Once it looks steamed and cooked, take it out and keep it aside. Let it cool.
- In a small frying pan, heat oil. When the oil becomes hot, add the mustard seeds, hing, curry leaves and green chillies. At last add the red chilli powder and immediately pour it on the steamed dhoklas.
Rajasthan style moong dal dhokla or dhokli is ready to eat. Cut into small pieces. Garnish this low fat snack recipe with grated coconut and serve with tamarind chutney and coriander chutney.
