The price factor is always there and the long list of ingredients looks pretty deceptive. And if you desire to go for one of those organic products you sure will have to shell out a bigger amount.
Now have you tried making your own lip balms? This little thing is worth giving a shot. It is simple to make and will give you your desired product. You can add in flavours of your choice and create your very own customized lip balm.

The basic ingredients required are beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil. Beeswax will give the lip balm its shape while shea butter and coconut oil will provide the nourishment to the lips. To bring about flavour and colour we can add essential oils, petals and herbs.
1. Peppermint:
We find the ingredient mint in many cosmetic and body care products. Mint gives a cooling and refreshed effect. To make your own peppermint lip balm take one tablespoon beeswax, two tablespoons each of coconut oil and shea butter in a bowl.
Run the bowl in a microwave for close to one minute stopping, checking and stirring at intervals. When melted and well mixed add the essential oil and mix again. Pour into sterilized containers and leave to settle.
2. Rose:
This is a colourful one. One part beeswax, two parts coconut oil and shea butter warmed and mixed in a microwave will give a molten balm. Add the rose petals to the molten ingredients and mix for some time. Allow the rose essence to infuse into the oils. You can remove the petals or retain them. Fill in sanitized boxes or little cans.
3. Fruit Balm:
Strawberries are one fruit that go well in cosmetic products. Same applies to the lip balm too. Grind freeze dried strawberries to a fine powder. Heat the beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil.
Add strawberry powder to the mixture. Make sure to allow only enough that you retain the running consistency. Allow the mixture to cool. Pass through a strainer to eliminate large lumps. Store in sanitized boxes or can.
4. Almond:
Just as we made peppermint lip balm we can make almond lip balms too. The quantity of beeswax, shea butter and coconut oil remain the same.
The steps too are the same with the only difference being in the essential oil. Instead of peppermint oil we add almond oil here.
5. Shea butter:
Many of us prefer to have plain and simple products without any enhancements; the ingredients in their pure form with no smell, colour or flavour.
For such people we have the plain lip balm which is a simple mix of shea butter, coconut oil and beeswax. Shea butter in itself is moisturizing and nourishing for the skin and will work equally effectively.
6. Chocolate:
Who does not like chocolate? To have it as a lip balm would mean having the chocolate all day long. Mix one tablespoon of beeswax, half tablespoon each of coconut oil and shea butter. Heat in a microwave for half a minutes stirring at regular intervals.
Run dry coconut powder in the microwave for half a minute. Mix the powder in the liquefied butter and oil and add a few drops of chocolate essential oil. Pour into storing containers and allow to set.
7. Coconut oil:
Coconut oil is one of the best oils for skin nourishment. It works deep down in the skin but does not leave you with a sticky and shiny look. The skin on the lips is very sensitive and need extra nourishment. Coconut oil is absolutely suited for this purpose.
Fill a jar with coconut oil and half the quantity with beeswax. Run it in the microwave for close to thirty seconds stirring in between. When melted mix well. Get rid of all lumps. Pour into storage containers and let it harden. To get a tinted lip balm you can add a small bit of your favourite lipstick at the melting stage.
There is great pleasure in whipping up products of your very own. Not only do they save money but also give immense satisfaction. These products also serve as good gifts for friends and family.
