Winter is here! And so is the season of cracked lips, peeling skin and skin-splitting white patches. As much as we like the heavenly respite from the sweltering heat of the summer, we can do without the miscellaneous additions that come with it.
And all these woes get aggravated ten-fold, thanks to the skin care mistakes we unwittingly commit! That's right, winter is no reason you go slack on your skin care. All you need to do is tweak your regimen, here and there, to bring out the best in you.
Start by taking a good close look at the label behind the products you use. Do your research and understand how each ingredient reacts on your skin.
All the products that worked like a charm during summer will not necessarily work during winter. And chemical components like alcohol and propane, found in certain products, do more damage than any good.
As much as possible, stick to natural ingredients. They work well on any skin type, without involving any toxic chemicals.
And for that added nourishment, here are some tips to care for your skin during winter!
Say No To Hot Water Bath
As much as it soothes our sore muscles, relaxes our mind and alleviates the stress knots in our body, hot water also makes our skin super-dry, disturbs the pH balance and damages the epidermic layer of the skin. Stick with lukewarm water instead, as it will keep your skin supple and hydrated!
Dial down on the suds. Your skin is comprised of both good and bad bacteria. It is the good bacteria that create the antibiotics required to stave off the bad ones. Soaps are packed with detergent, which not just removes the lipid and oils from skin, drying it out, but also kills the good bacteria hampering the delicate balance of the skin!
Using Harsh Scrub
Scrub removes dead skin layer, and allows for the better absorption of moisture, true! But, it also dries the skin out, especially during winter. Cut down on the number of times you scrub your skin and keep it to once or twice in a month. And opt for hydrating ingredients instead, like sugar and olive oil.
Opting For Light Lotion In Winter
As we mentioned earlier. What works during summer may not necessarily work during winter too. Your skin's requirement has changed and you need to modify the products accordingly. Use heavier formula in winter or skin-nourishing oils. One that creates a thick moisture barrier and lasts longer!
Lathering On Lip Balm On Peeling Lips!
Cracked lips is an inevitable part of winter. And when you keep lathering on layers and layers of lip balm, over the peeled lips, you are just masking the problem, not healing it! To accelerate the healing process and allow the chapstick to hydrate your lips better, exfoliate the dead skin layers first!
Try herbal scrubs to treat chapped lips, like honey and sugar, they work like a charm!
Just because it is winter, there is no reason you go slack on SPF. If anything, you need to be even more diligent, as UV rays tend to be twice as active in winter than in summer. So, do yourself a favour, slap on some sunscreen with a good SPF value at least an hour before you step out.
