Every year, as the monsoon settles over India, temple bells ring a little longer and Shivlings across the country disappear under a steady stream of water and milk. Shravan, the fifth month of the Hindu calendar, is widely considered the most sacred period for devotees of Lord Shiva - and this year's observance begins in the first week of August 2026.

Why Shravan Holds Such Spiritual Weight

The month's importance, Ashutosh explains, goes back to the Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean, when a deadly poison called Halahal emerged before the nectar of immortality could appear.

"None of the gods dared to touch it," he said. Lord Shiva lifted the poison and held it in his throat rather than letting it destroy creation, becoming Neelkanth - the blue-throated one. That act, according to Ashutosh, took place during Shravan itself, which is why the gods are said to have poured water over Shiva to cool the effect of the poison, a practice devotees continue today as Jalabhishek.

"Every drop of water poured over the Shivling is an expression of gratitude that has continued for thousands of years," he said.

He also draws a parallel with the season itself. Shravan coincides with the monsoon, "as though the heavens perform an abhishek on the earth for an entire month." Because Lord Shiva is believed to be most easily pleased during this period, Ashutosh insists elaborate rituals aren't the point. "A single pot of water offered with a sincere heart is enough."
