When Is World Hepatitis Day 2026, And Why This Date
World Hepatitis Day falls on 28 July every year. It aims to raise global awareness of hepatitis, a group of infectious diseases known as hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E, while encouraging prevention, diagnosis and treatment. The date is not arbitrary. It marks the birthday of Dr Baruch Blumberg, the scientist who discovered the hepatitis B virus and went on to develop its first vaccine - a breakthrough that has since prevented millions of infections worldwide.

The Theme For 2026: "Hepatitis - Let's Break It Down"

This year's theme is "Hepatitis: Let's Break It Down." It calls for action to remove the barriers that prevent people from accessing hepatitis prevention, testing, treatment and care. Those barriers aren't abstract - stronger political commitment and sustained investment are needed to expand access to prevention, testing, treatment and care services, and to accelerate progress towards eliminating viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030.

The urgency isn't rhetorical. In 2024, viral hepatitis caused approximately 1.3 million deaths worldwide - a toll comparable to tuberculosis - primarily from cirrhosis and liver cancer.
From A Patchwork Observance To A Global Health Day
World Hepatitis Day didn't begin as one unified event. A hepatitis-related awareness event was first observed on 1 October 2004 as "International Hepatitis C Awareness Day," coordinated by various European and Middle Eastern patient groups, each marking it on different dates. To consolidate the effort, the World Hepatitis Alliance declared 19 May 2008 as the first global World Hepatitis Day. A resolution at the World Health Assembly in 2010 then moved the date to 28 July, to honour Dr Blumberg's work.

Why This Still Needs An Awareness Day
Hepatitis remains under-diagnosed largely because it doesn't hurt until it's serious. Fatigue, mild nausea, or nothing at all - these are common early presentations of hepatitis B and C, which is precisely why routine testing matters more than waiting for symptoms.
Hepatologists who treat chronic liver disease routinely see this pattern: patients arrive only once jaundice, swelling, or abnormal liver function tests appear - by which point scarring may already be underway. That delay is what "breaking it down" is meant to address - breaking down the stigma that keeps people from getting tested, the cost barriers that keep treatment out of reach, and the health-system gaps that leave diagnosed patients without follow-up care.

The reassurance, though, is genuine: effective vaccines, accurate diagnostics, curative treatments for hepatitis C, and lifelong therapies for hepatitis B already exist and can prevent infections, save lives, and reduce liver cancer and cirrhosis. The gap isn't in science. It's in access.
