Tirukkural-On Virtue-Social Cooperation-Kural 220

By Staff

Thirukkural In English, Kural 220
Oppuravinaal varum kaedu yenin akthoruvan
Vitrukkoal thakkadhu udaithu

Even if social co-operation throws up harm, it is worth embracing at any price If it appears to ruin you, it is indeed well worth being so ruined.

There is no price too high to pay for being of service to society. Old Tamil literature is specific on this point.

Aduth thondrirath thaark kon reendhaaraik koandaar
paduthaezayaa menru poahinum poaha

(Pazhamozhi 218)

Biblical support for this idea is had from the following words of the Lord Jesus Christ.

'If thou wilt be perfect go and sell all that thou hast and give to the poor, and thou shalt have treasures in heaven, and come and follow me.'

(Matt. 19:21)
