Just as wealth does no good to those who do not cherish it in the right spirit,Compassion too will not co-exist with meat-eating.

According to Valluvar, obviously, it is a basic essential of having compassion, to be merciful to all living beings and so ensure the effective protection of all life. Meat-eating will be inconsistent with such an attitude.

The idea that wealth is to be cherished and used properly is enshrined in the following line of Athichudi – 252.

Valluvar's teaching is that it is equally important to eschew meat-eating, in order to practise true compassion.
