Story Of Sita's Birth

Mata Sita was the daughter of King Janaka and Queen Sunayana who ruled the Kingdom of Mithila. Mithila was facing a period of drought and the King decided to perform a Yagnya. This Yagnya would help please the Gods and would bring rains to the water-starved country. For the Yagnya, the land had to be ploughed first. King Janaka was using a plough to till the land and then the plough struck something metallic.

Upon digging further, a casket was obtained. When it was opened, they were all surprised to find a baby girl in it. King Janaka and Queen Sunayana decided to raise the baby as their own. With the baby's first cries, heavy rains graced the land and the period of drought was finally over.

As the casket was obtained from the earth, Sita is considered to be the daughter of Mother Earth or 'Bhoomi Devi'. Due to this, Sita is also known as Bhoomija. As King Janaka became the adoptive father of Sita, She was called Janaki. As the princess of Mithila, she was also named Maithili. The name Sita literally means the plough, as it was what was used to discover her from under the earth's surface.
