Why The Month Of Shravan Is Significant?

The month of Shravan is the official beginning of the Monsoon in India. Although the rains have started about a month back, this will be the peak of the Monsoons. In Hinduism, the month of Shravan is not just associated with the rains. There is a lot of significance attached to Shravan as it is a holy and auspicious month in the Hindu calendar.

Some communities among the Hindus eat vegetarian foods during the month of Shravan. It is not only because this is a scared month, but also because the rains can cause a lot of stomach infections. It is best to eat light.

To understand the significance of Shravan, you need to take a closer look at the rituals associated with it and here they are.

Rituals In The Month Of Shravan

Sindhara
In North India, Shravan is a gala month for girls and young women. There is a festival called Sindhara that celebrates womanhood. All young girls are given new clothes and accessories by their parents. Married women receive gifts from both their parents and in-laws. Married daughters come home to visit their parents and there is rejoice all around.

Month Of Lord Shiva
We all know that Shravan is a month dedicated to the great deity, Lord Shiva. But very few people know the actual cause behind this. The 'Samudra Manthan' happened during this month. While churning the great ocean gave amazing gifts like Goddess Lakshmi and a pot of 'Amrit' or elixir, but it also fumed the terrible poison called 'Halahal'. Lord Shiva came forward and swallowed this poison to stop it from infecting the Universe. That is why, this month is totally dedicated to Lord Shiva.

Shravan Somvar
Monday is the special day for Lord Shiva. That is why, every Monday that comes in the month of Shravan is extremely auspicious. On the Shravan Somvars, women fast and do puja of Lord Shiva. It is supposed to be a sure shot way to get a good husband!

Month Of Wedding
The Monsoon wedding has a special significance in India. Shravan is an auspicious month for weddings. It is believed that a girl who gets married at the peak of Monsoon will be blessed with many healthy children. It is does not seem like a very welcoming proposition now. However, the rains are inherently related to fertility rituals.
