Significance Of Indian Wedding Mantras

In India, a marriage does not happen on pen and paper. A couple is bound in holy matrimony with the Indian wedding mantras. Although we have come to the age of registered marriages, a Hindu wedding is open centred around the saat pheras and other wedding rituals.

Ritualistic as we are, wedding is one of the main occasion for all our customs to come forth in full glory. It is the Indian wedding mantras that determine the fate of a couple and make them believe in their marital status.

Ganesha
Om Gang Ganapataye Namah

The very first mantra in any Hindu wedding will ask for Ganesha's blessings. Every good deed in Hindu society is started by invoking Lord Ganesha for His blessing as He is the remover of all obstacles.

Prajapati Manta
Om Prajapataye Namaha

This is the most basic mantra of a Hindu wedding. Even all the wedding invitation cards start by saying 'Om Shree Shree Prajapataye Namah'. Actually Prajapataya is a type of Hindu marriage. It basically means that the brides father has gone in search of a suitable groom and has consented to give his daughter away. To put it simply, it is an arranged marriage that has been agreed upon by both families.

Saath Pheras

The bride and groom and supposed to go around the sacred fire 7 times. With each phera, there is promise that they make to each other. The saat pheras are incanted with holy mantras to make a Hindu wedding complete.

The Promise of Love
Jajidang Hriyanyang Tabo, Tadidang Hriyanyang Mamo

This is the most basic Indian wedding mantra. The meaning of this Sanskrit sloka is that ‘as long as I reside in your heart, so long will you reside in my heart'. Both the bride and groom are made to say this mantra. It binds them in a relationship until death do them apart.

Mangalam Mantra
Mangalam Bhagwan Vishnu Mangalam Karunadwaja...

Every auspicious occasion must be enchanted with holy mantras. And the mangalam mantra is supposed to ward of all evils. That is why, this mantra is chanted in every Hindu wedding.
