Ramana Maharshi-The Prevailing Reality
Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi
Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi a great Indian Master, was drawn to Arunachala the holy hill in Thiruvannamalai where he continued to guide multitudes in the spiritual path. He was born to Sundaram Iyer and Azhagammal in Thiruchuzi near Madurai in Tamilnadu on December 30, 1879 . He was christened Venkataraman by His parents. He was sent to live with His paternal uncle in Dhindigul with His brother Nagaswami to be admitted in an English medium school.Venkataraman lost His father at the age of twelve leaving behind, Him and His siblings Nagaswami, Nagasundram and Alamelu. Later they moved to Madurai when His uncle Subbu Iyer was transferred on work

He first chanced to hear the word 'Arunachala' from an elderly relative when He was in the ninth grade. The very word Arunachala caused an emotional stir within Him.

The Death Experience

The great awakening or His death experience is what marked the beginning of His total absorption in the 'Self' all through His life time. One day as He was sitting alone in a room in His uncle's house, the fear of death seized Him all of a sudden. Surprisingly He did not get probed to call the doctor or report to His elders. Instead He was probed to enquire within Himself what death was all about. He just lay down rigidly as if Rigor Mortis had set in and sought to follow all the happenings that followed death; the body being carried to the cremation ground and getting burnt. The truth then dawned that He would still exist even at the destruction of the body. Hence He came to know the truth that He taught the world at large who flocked at His feet that one was not the body or the mind that one thinks to be, but the immortal self.

He then lost interest in His studies, family and friends. Once when His brother sarcastically rebuked Him for His indifference to studies when He went into meditation while doing His homework. The words drove home the truth and Venkataraman started off towards Arunachala with just three rupees after having written a letter without His signature which silently implied that He totally existed outside the realms of the body.

In Arunnachala

On reaching Arunachala, He marched straightly into the temple and reported to the deity 'Arunachaleshwara' (Lord Shiva) about His arrival. He spent the first few weeks in the Patala-Lingam shrine in the precincts of the Arunachaleshwara temple. Here He was completely absorbed in Samadhi where he was totally unconscious of termite bites and disturbing young urchins who pelted stones at Him. He was then identified by Sheshadri Swamigal (a local saint) who carried Him out and insisted Him to get cleaned up. Venkataraman then stayed in different places in Thiruvannamalai. He was first proclaimed as Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi by Kavyakantha Ganapati Muni, a Vedic scholar of repute after having received spiritual instructions from Him.

Ramana was however identified by His family in Thiruvannamalai . His mother moved in to live with Him in Skandashram and later followed Him to Ramanashram where she lived until she was absorbed in the self. A Samadhi was then consecrated by Ramana where Her body was laid and a Lingam called Matrubootheshwara was placed.

Devotees started flocking around Him with a lot of Westerners as well who came to partake of His rational and logical teachings.

Teachings (Who Am I)

The central teaching of Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi is to turn one's mind inwards and enquire who one really is, the realization of which is the answer to all spiritual queries and the ultimate spiritual realization. He taught in silence to the minds attuned to it ; for others He gave verbal instructions. His teachings contained the essence of Advaita..

Mahasamadhi

Bhagavan Ramana Maharshi shed His mortal coil on 14th April, 1950. A meteor shot across the sky, reached the top of Arunachala and disappeared behind it when he shed His mortal coil.

Ramanashram

Ramanashram, even today serves as a sanctuary for hearts yearning for spiritual progress. It is truly an abode of peace, simplicity and piety and one can commune with the Master or just lose oneself in Him by just closing one's eyes and following His teachings.
