9 Ways To Stop Lashing Out At Your Spouse
Lashing out at your spouse is often the easiest way to take out your frustration. It is also a sure shot way to push your spouse away from you. Usually, lashing out at your husband or wife is something that you do when you are frustrated about something else. We often take out our frustration on those who are closest to us. But you must always realise that ‘lashing and ‘raging' is extremely hurtful to these very people who are closest to us.
Fighting with your spouse is a common phenomenon in every marriage. However, there has to be a legitimate reason for this fighting. Lashing out at your spouse usually happens for no reason at all. You lash out at your husband or wife when you have no serious cause to do so. If you analyse the reasons for which you lashed out at your partner, you will realise that it is often for the silliest of reasons.
Fighting with your spouse is healthy but lashing out has to be curbed as much as possible. You and your partner have to learn how to resolve fights without shouting. Shouting often makes the fight go out of your hand. Even if you had a reasonable argument, lashing out at your spouse will put you in the wrong. Here are some simple ways to stop lashing out at your husband or wife.
Give Yourself 60 Seconds To Consider
Always remember that lashing out is the easiest and most tempting thing to do at that moment. So give yourself at least 60 seconds to think just before you are about to shout.
Try Deep Breathing
Sometimes, taking a few deep breaths will help you calm down. When the extra oxygen reaches your brain, you can think more clearly.
Leave The Place Immediately
If you cannot get over the urge to shout, leave the place immediately. Go to the balcony or go for a walk quickly.
Drink Some Water
You need to do something to break your urge to shout. Drinking water is the easiest and most non-intoxicating way to stop you from lashing out.
Talk To Your Spouse
Just tell your spouse clearly and calmly that you are very upset and nagging you any further will make you lash out which you will obviously regret later. It might calm down your spouse as well.
Kiss Or Hug Your Spouse Instead
When you have an urge to do something violent and sudden like shouting, then curb your instincts. Do something violently romantic instead. Kiss or hug your spouse suddenly. It might just end the fight all together.
Try To Think Of Something Funny
Think of the joke you just read on your phone or something funny that happened recently. It helps you to divert your mind when you are about to lash out.
Start Doing Something You Like
Instead of spending your energy in lashing out and creating more negativity, do something you like to do. Start cooking or sketching or even cleaning the house.
Change The Topic
Sometimes, your spouse might unknowingly push the fight to a topic you are sensitive about. This makes you prone to shouting. So, change the topic immediately.
