It's something like, what came first – the chicken or the egg? While these are good questions, there aren't any correct answers.
We as Indians hail from a more traditional way of life and hence would have mixed reactions to this. Mixed because, the more modern Indian would definitely want to adhere to the hyped culture that has taken hold of our society and hence go with the flow; whereas the traditionalist's, after humming and hawing, their answer would definitely be Wed first. No marks there!
Leave alone not allowing sex before marriage, conventionally here, the couple would have been considered lucky if they got a chance to see each other's face before their suhag raat.
But today, it is becoming more and more difficult for parents to keep a tab on their children who are leaving the comforts of their home to go out into the world for higher studies or for the call of the greens (money). Besides, there is exposure to unfiltered information through various forms of expression such as books, magazines, films, paintings, etc. And yes, this revelation and 'living out of home' culture has matured the kids beyond their age. But hey, maturity has nothing to do with age. Maturity can come as early as in the teens or as late as nineties. It is the act of doing the right thing at the right time, and mostly with the right person. It is of little consequence whether we stick to old traditions or create new cultures, as long as there is a right reason for doing it. In a given situation, perhaps children would act wisely if their parents are more frank and open in their discussions and not treat this topic as taboo.
Let us not get confused here with sex just for the sake of it like "Ram-Bam-Thank-You-Ma'am" Nope. Pre-marital sex is the joining of bodies where the souls have already connected. The new generation of men and women get engaged initially and then happily wait for years to get married; maybe till they complete their studies and settle into well paying job and they are confident enough of having a secured future together. They don't mind the waiting.
Sex is a baser instinct and will always prevail with people finding outlets in various forms. It is like when people are hungry, some may eat any garbage that comes their way and some will wait for the right food. And then, there may be others who would prefer to listen to some good music as a means of diversion from their feeling of hunger. Are you there with me?
Whether pre-marital sex is right or wrong, is not up for debate here. Physical intimacy is a natural demonstration of love and this is completely a personal decision to be taken by both the people involved.
However, all said and done, we still do associate weddings with white and in turn, white with virginity. Today, the concept of marriage has changed from what it was originally meant to be. There is no blueprint, but yes, in this day and age, few think about maintaining the sacredness of this institution and thus remain ignorant of the beauty of intimacy that lies therein.
Hey, welcome to the "fast cars" generation where morality burns under the wheels. Get one without a "test drive"? No way!! Yeah.
