You have to be delicate in handling you man when you start digging deeper into them. Men usually protect their space and make it that much harder for you to get much out of their sanctity.

Knowing his work and his passion towards his work can let you know him a lot more deeply. You can start by talking about his work and how his day went at work, etc. You can take opportunities to talk to his colleagues during any office parties or get-togethers.

Be a good listener
It can't get any simpler than this to know him better. Don't just hear him out, be a keen listener when he talks about himself and his passions. You don't want to be caught unawares when you are supposed to back him up with something he might have told you earlier.
