Ways To Be Happy Without Friends

By Tara Hari

There might come a time in your life when you find yourself alone, without the company of friends. This may be the case once you graduate from college and lose touch with all your school or college friends. You might move to a new city or country and find yourself alone there. In your late 20s, your friends would all be married or in far away places and you will be all by yourself. Or sometimes, you might fight with your friends or have difficulties making friends. While friends are an essential part of every person's life, they are not a prerequisite to your happiness. Without friends dragging you down, you can do things that you have always wanted to do like going on adventure hikes or redecorating your entire house.

Ways To Be Happy Without Friends

This is a time to get to know yourself, so cherish every moment of it. Here are some ways to be happy without friends.

Take Up A Hobby
There might be a number of things that you have always wanted to devote your spare time to, but never had a chance. Now that you have the time, take that dance class you have always wanted to, or that kickboxing class you have been afraid to join. It will also be a good way to meet and interact new people.

Pamper Yourself
Spend a day at a spa or saloon. Go on a shopping spree and try on anything that catches your fancy. You have all the time in the world since your impatient friends are not standing by the door, tapping her feet. Learn to indulge yourself in different ways.

Quality Family Time
You might have brushed off your parents during your teenage and college years to spend time with your friends. Now is the time to make-up for that. Try doing fun activities with your parents like going fishing with your father or taking a yoga class with your mother. They will definitely appreciate the gesture.

Volunteer
Find a cause you believe in and work towards it. There are numerous NGOS out there championing different causes. Use your spare time to make in a positive change in society.

Get A Pet
If you really crave companionship that much, get yourself a pet. If you want affection and devotion, opt for a cute puppy who will become your constant companion. Get a cat if you want a less clingy pet. If you are too busy with work, you can always opt for a charming goldfish.

Make Friends With Books

This is the perfect time to read all those books that you put away, intending to read. Books are lifelong companions, and you will never feel alone when you have a beloved book in your hands.

Enjoy Doing Things Alone

There is no rule that you need two people to go watch a movie or eat out. Learn to enjoy doing these things by yourself. Revel in the experience. You might feel embarrassed, but learn to get past that. To love others, you have to love yourself first. In the same way, you have to learn to enjoy doing things by yourself before enjoying them with others.

The biggest myth propagated by society is that you constantly need to surround yourself with people. You should not make friends out of fear of being alone. Learn to enjoy spending time alone by following these ways to be happy without friends.
