Top 8 Foods That Cause Miscarriage

Pregnancy is one of the most beautiful moments for a woman. During this period, it becomes important for women to have a healthy diet to have a smooth delivery and a healthy child.

However, did you know that eating certain food items, especially in the first trimester of pregnancy, may cause a threat to your baby?

Eating some items like pineapple or drinking pineapple juice, eating crabs, raw eggs, canned fish, etc, can cause a miscarriage.

Miscarriage during an early stage of pregnancy (first trimester) is very common and can be triggered by these miscarriage-inducing food items.

While a lot depends on the health of a woman, age, food habits and health during pregnancy, these food items can be potentially harmful to a woman and her foetus during the first trimester.

Eating these food items can cause internal contractions and cervix dilation leading to a miscarriage. Here’s a list of food items that you should avoid during pregnancy. Have a look:


Eating pineapple or drinking pineapple juice during the first trimester of your pregnancy can result in a stillbirth. Pineapple consists of bromelain, which is responsible for causing contractions in pregnant women.

This can cause a miscarriage. So, it is better to avoid this fruit during the first trimester of your pregnancy.


Besides its scrumptious taste, crab is also packed with high levels of calcium and nutrients. But, you should avoid eating them too much during early stages of pregnancy, as they can cause the uterus to shrink, causing internal bleeding or even stillbirth.

Besides, it also contains a high level of cholesterol, which isn't good for a pregnant woman's health.


Sesame Seeds

A pregnant woman should not eat too much of sesame seeds during pregnancy. Sesame seeds, when mixed with honey, can lead to a miscarriage in pregnant women.

A pregnant woman should eat sesame seeds sparingly, as it one of the major miscarriage-causing foods. However, black sesame seeds can be consumed during the last stages of pregnancy, as they help in an easier delivery.


Animal Liver

A liver is generally healthy and is packed with vitamin A. While it is not unsafe to eat it once or twice in a month, it can be harmful if you eat it every day during pregnancy.

Eating it every day can lead to a high build-up of retinol that can be harmful for your unborn baby.


Aloe Vera

Aloe vera is great for the hair, skin and digestion. But, pregnant women should avoid consuming aloe vera juice, as it can lead to pelvic haemorrhage causing a miscarriage.

It is advisable to avoid using aloe vera products during the first trimester of pregnancy.



Papaya is one of the dangerous miscarriage-inducing food items. Green or unripe papaya contains enzymes that can lead to uterine contractions, leading to a miscarriage.

That's why a pregnant woman should avoid consuming green papaya, especially during her pregnancy. Avoid eating it in a salad or in the dishes made out of it.



Drumsticks, which are commonly used in sambhar, are full of vitamins, iron and potassium. But, these veggies contain alpha-sitosterol, which is harmful for a pregnant women to be consumed. This oestrogen-like structure can lead to a miscarriage.

Hence, pregnant women must stay away from consuming this during pregnancy.


Unpasteurised Dairy Products

Unpasteurised dairy products such as milk, feta cheese, gorgonzola, brie, etc, contain bacteria named Listeria, which can be very harmful to women during the different stages of their pregnancy.

This bacterium is also found in uncooked poultry and seafood. So, pregnant women should take special care to avoid these food items during pregnancy.
