New Mothers Can Try These 10 Super Foods To Increase Their Breast Milk

Production of breast milk is important for lactating mothers, since it gives babies all the nutrition. To boost the production of breast milk, here are 10 natural superfoods.

Breast milk is by far the best nutrition for newborns. Doctors and various other campaigns stress breastfeeding as a must post childbirth; however, not all mothers lactate as per the requirement, making formula milk the only other option to supply the infant with the necessary nutrients.

It is a must to breastfeed your baby in the early months of your baby's life, as it has all the nutrients that can help in the development process. Also, the breast milk contains components that can boost the baby's immune system.

And there are definitely foods that lactating mothers can include in their diet to increase the breast milk supply. Therefore, to increase the formation of breast milk in mothers, these 10 superfoods are of tremendous help:

Garlic

Garlic has therapeutic and herbal benefits and it helps in producing milk in mothers. Mothers who take more garlic in some form have been found to breastfeed their child more. Garlic can be taken separately or with cooked food.

Fennel Seeds (Saunf)

They are very useful in increasing the breast milk production. Besides, these seeds also help in curing digestion-related problems and constipation. Soak the seeds in a glass of water for the night and drink it in the morning. You can also take them with vegetables or chew some after meals.

Sesame Seeds (Til)

An excellent source of copper and calcium, sesame seeds give both the mother and baby powerful micro-nutrients. Sesame seeds can be taken either with vegetable preparations or lentils and pulses as til ka laddoos.

Carom Seeds (Ajwain)

Known to help our digestive system and cure constipation, carom seeds also boost milk production in new mothers. Soak carom and fennel seeds in a glass of water for the night and drink in the morning. You can also add carom seeds in your dishes.

Fenugreek (Methi Seeds)

The galactogogues in fenugreek seeds help in producing breast milk in new mothers. You can either have these seeds with vegetables or by drinking the glass of water early morning after soaking the seeds in it overnight. Methi seed tea by boiling the seeds in water is also helpful. Methi ka laddoo is another wonderful food to increase milk production.

Cumin Seeds (Jeera)

Rich in iron, cumin seeds help in boosting the breast milk production in mothers and also give them postpartum strength. Take these with dal, curries and other vegetable dishes. You can also drink water that has been soaked with cumin seeds overnight.

Dry Fruits

Eat a handful of dry fruits or take them with dishes or desserts. They help in the case of lactating mothers.

The Gourd Club

All types of gourds are helpful in aiding lactation. Make preparations with them the way you like or you can drink their juice as well.

Oats

Packed with fibre, iron and calcium, oats are great agents in improving lactation. Take a bowl of oats in breakfast. Take them either with milk or with other foods like upma, poha, etc.

Red Vegetables

Carrots, beetroot, sweet potatoes, etc., should be included in the diet of lactating women. Besides increasing breast milk, they also improve the liver health and cure anaemia in new mothers. Take these vegetables either in your salad or in curries.

It is not wise to ignore non-vegetarian foods at this stage either, irrespective of some prevalent beliefs about their ill-effects. And never forget to drink water. Since breast milk contains a very high percentage of water, ignoring it will not boost lactation and your baby will suffer as a result.
