Teaching Your Child The Importance Of Helping Out

By Nikita D Nain

Spare the rod and spoil the child is a phrase that is commonly used by many. Chances are that your well-wishers or even your spouse might have mentioned this phrase to you.

Although offensive to the ears, this phrase merely tries to point out the value of discipline.

Yes, discipline is very important to function in today's world. Disciplining your child today can help him/her lead an organised and happy life tomorrow. A part of discipline is to help out around the house.

Helping parents to clear the dinning table after a meal is one of such tasks. Taking the garbage bag outside near the collection area is another task.

All these seemingly useless tasks are actually valuable life lessons that you must teach your children to follow. Each and every one of these lessons fall under the umbrella term of being responsible.

The simple act of helping out accomplishes more than the eyes meet. While helping out, the child learns the importance of contributing for a greater good.

The child also learns the importance of following a daily schedule without fail. Children also learn the importance of not making excuses. Helping around the house prepares your child for the tasks that he/she will have to complete later on in life.

Help Your Child Take Small Steps Every Week
Instead of making a lengthy schedule for Day 1, start small. Introducing a new task to accomplish on a weekly basis will help him/her build his/her threshold over a period of time.

Start with the easiest and simplest tasks. As he/she gets comfortable with this schedule, move a level higher.

Set A Schedule
Right from Day 1, set a schedule. Your child should know in advance that he/she has to complete a certain set of tasks every day.

Do not encourage or accept excuses, as this is the pathway to failure. If there is a genuine excuse, then show lenience for 1 or 2 days. Use your judgement carefully. If children are smart, parents have to be smarter!

Don's Force, Instead Explain The Importance Of "Helping Out"
Children have the ability to reason and listen to logic. Instead of forcing your kid, use this sense of reasoning to work in your favour.

Explain the situation in a simple manner. Telling your child about the importance of sharing the burden of various tasks amongst family members might help.

Positive Reinforcement
Use positive reinforcements such as positive comments, gold stars that lead to a small reward. Choosing a reward according to the task lying ahead is a good option. Gifting your child a mobile for folding clothes, will only send the wrong signal.

Most Importantly, Start Now!
If your child is old enough, he/she should be taught the value of helping out right from today. It is believed that children need to be 8 years or older to help out. This is not true.
Children these days are brighter than children from the previous generations. This makes them more capable of handling such tasks at an early age.

Take a minute or two, observe your child and decide when you would like to teach him/her and that it's time for him/her pull his/her weight around the house.
