Should Parents Do Kids' Projects?

Parents love to help or assist their children in academics. But, what are the dos and don’ts that a parent has to understand while teaching their children? Current curriculum is designed in such a way that children have to do various projects on diverse topics. This is intended to develop and improve the curiosity, creativity and intelligence of the children. Most of the times, it is natural that kids need some assistance in completing their work. It will be good if parents give this support.

But, there are many parents who do the entire project for their children. Some think that their children are not capable of doing it alone, while some others want to make the work stand the best among the whole class. It is true that there are many parents who even seek professional help to do the children’s projects. Here, we will discuss whether parents should do kids' projects and if yes, what is their limit.

Meet the purpose: The purpose of children’s project is to progress the creativity and enthusiasm of children by understanding the practical aspect of a theory. Should parents do kids' projects? This should be addressed correctly while considering the improvement of your kid. Remember that it is not only about high grades in the class, but also about the intellectual growth of your kid.

Boost confidence: Parents doing child’s project completely is not recommended because it will affect the confidence of children in their academic performance. You can give suggestions and instructions, but allow your kid to do it alone. You have to monitor each stages of development of the work and encourage them to do their best.

Don’t be a control freak: Allow your kid to experiment! Remember, it is the purpose of a project. You can add to the effort of your kid by providing materials for the project, a comfortable workplace or help him/her in clearing the mess.

Explain the concept: It is a good idea to explain the concept of the project to your kids. But, avoid giving suggestions in the beginning. Allow your kid to come up with their own ideas. Later, check each of the ideas and see the practical side of it. Now, it’s your turn to give suggestions and directions. This will help the kid present the work with confidence.

Be a supervisor, not performer: If you are always ready to do the projects of your kids, it is natural that they will lose their seriousness towards academics. But, you are more experienced than your kid, so supervision is the best thing that you can do for the project work of your kid.
