Are Your Kids Using Internet Correctly?
Kids use Internet extensively these days. It is hard to restrict technology and the progress of kids. Monitoring the Internet use of your kids is a part of the parenting process now. It is not easy to understand exactly how much Internet your kids use. This is because kids are often more tech savvy than their parents.
However, the use of Internet is a very subjective matter. Technology is neither good nor evil. The use of technology can be made for both good and evil deeds. To ensure that your kids use the Internet judiciously, keep a tab on these points.
Internet for Research: Most kids use Internet for researching on several topics. If your child is using the Internet as a knowledge base for doing extra research on academic topics, then it is a good thing. However, if your kid is using the Internet to stay away from hard work, then it is sheer laziness. Some kids download their entire project from the Net these days. So you need to check their work for plagiarism.
Calculators: Does your kid know the tables for 11 or 7? Most kids forgot the habit of memorising tables these days because calculators are so easily available. However, this will make them weak in mental maths. Certain basic tables must be memorised. There is no replacement for hard work and memory.
General Knowledge: As you can easily surf the Internet to find out who built the Taj Mahal, kids find no need to remember historical details. However this makes their general knowledge weak. As parents, you must ensure that your kid's basic general knowledge is good. They must know about current affairs and some rudimentary historical facts.
Social Media: Any child less than 18 years is legally not allowed to have a profile on the social media. But tech savvy kids know very well how to cheat the age limit. You need to be on all the social networking sites yourself to make sure that your kids are not up to any mischief.
Adult Websites: There is provision to request your internet service provider and have all the adult websites blocked. This is still not a full-proof way to ensure that your kids don't view adult content. The only option is to be vigilant.
These are some tips for parenting your kids to use the Internet properly. Do you feel that your kid is using the Internet correctly?
