6 Life Lessons To Learn From Tom And Jerry

By Anirudh Narayanan

Tom and Jerry is a series of short films created in 1940 by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Tom is the cat and Jerry is the mouse. Each episode begins with Tom either chasing Jerry or devising an ingenious plan to get rid of Jerry mouse. Though we would think that a cat would probably just eat the rat, Tom does no such thing. With him it's mostly about challenging his opponent and trying to win by resorting to any gimmicks. Even though the story seems monotonous, there are many things that we can learn from Tom and Jerry.

Size Does Not Matter
Jerry, with his tiny stature, is often underestimated but he is always one step ahead of Tom. In the 1965 episode The Cat's Me-Ouch! Jerry orders a bull dog to keep Tom away. What arrives in a huge box is a tiny little bull dog which is even smaller than Jerry. As Tom laughs looking at it, the dog, in a rapid motion eats of his fur. So, one of the most important lessons from the Tom and Jerry show is that, size does not really matter.

Be Confident No Matter What
Jerry is always confident of his capabilities, no matter how steep the hurdle. He sips milk right from Tom's bowl and has devised his own itinerary to the local fridge for all his necessities. On the Tom and Jerry tv show, Jerry is always confident of his escape routes in case of an emergency.

What Goes Around Comes Around
Another life lesson from these wonderful cartoons is that, what goes around comes around. Tom makes devious plans for Jerry, only to fall prey to his own schemes. Trust in karma and do good. Don't expect anything and life will be better.

To Face A Common Enemy Become Friends
The things we learn from Tom and Jerry can be quite profound. There were instances when Tom and Jerry joined hands to beat a common enemy. Remember the time when the other alley cats tried beating up Tom and take Jerry? They paired with each other to fight the alley cats and drive them away from home.

Sharing Is Caring
Tom and Jerry are fighting each other most of the times. But there are times when they share their foods and even their sorrows with each other. It is touching to see that even though they fight each other day-in and day-out, they know when and where to draw the line.

We Fight With The Ones We Love The Most
It is often said that we fight with our loved ones the most. The reason is probably that our loved ones understand us like no other. And we also feel strongly about them. We know for sure that no matter what we do, our loved ones will stand right beside us when it counts.
