7 Things Every Atheist In India Has To Hear

By Anirudh Narayanan

Contrary to popular opinion, atheists aren't messengers of the devil. They aren't the ones who will bring about the Armageddon. Atheism is a way of life where an individual abstains from believing in deities. It does not necessarily mean that they are wrong. But the Indian society is hell-bent on making atheists believe in a God and they are in no mood to accept another possibility.

Atheists are ridiculed and some are even beaten up for questioning God and his beliefs. Scientific and factual answers don't even matter to these supposed 'Godmen'. Killing in the name of God is quite normal but believing in peace and being an atheist isn't.

Though some of the religions like Buddhism and Hinduism consider atheism to be acceptable, the religious fanatics far outnumber the open-minded. So, atheism is still a huge taboo and will take a long time before people accept the possibility or are indifferent to it.

Read on as we cover some of the things that are said to atheists in India.

Atheist In India | Things Atheist Believe In | Criticism On Atheism

Sab Tere Doston Ki Wajah Se Hai - It's All Because Of Your Friends
Atheists are never forced into becoming one but the society doesn't understand that. They always think that it is the friends or another social group. Atheists in India face a lot of flak. What's worse is that even their friends are categorised in the same category. Generalising is our birth-right after all!

Tujhe Mandir Jaana Chahiye - You Should Go To A Temple
Mandir or a temple means different things to different people. For some it is the answer to every question, while for others it's a place of calm where they can reflect on life and its various aspects. But the Indian society treats atheists as if they are in some dreamland and 'mandir' would jolt them out of it! One of those things that atheists can't explain.

Bhoot Ki Pooja Karta Hai Tu? - Do You Worship The Devil?
Indian society assumes that atheists are against God and hence worship the devil! The logic would put Einstein to shame. But no, atheists in India do not worship the devil. And for that matter, they don't worship anybody and are against nobody. They don't go around trying to prove that there's no God.

Aatankwadi Banoge Kya? - Do You Plan On Becoming A Terrorist?
Its ironic how atheists in India are thought of as terrorists, as most of the terrorists do things in the name of religion! The criticism on atheism isn't a new thing. But comments such as the above establish new lows in the thought process of an average Indian.

Tujhe Shaadi Karni Chahiye! - You Should Get Married
The society in India has this weird notion that marriage is the solution for everything. So, it isn't weird for an atheist to hear things such as the above. But marriage isn't a solution and to begin with, atheism isn't a problem! It is one of those weird things that atheists can't explain.

Chutti? Par Tu Toh Naastik Hai! - Leave? But Aren't You An Atheist?
While everyone is taking leave on festivals like there is no tomorrow atheists are asked questions such as the above before granting leave! While atheists don't believe in Gods they can still be a part of the festivities with their families, cant they?

Narak Jaega Tu! - You're Going To Hell!
Its pretty stupid that people think atheists are afraid of hell, when they don't even believe in a heaven. Atheists in India don't believe in the traditional notions of good and evil as purported by the deities. They might find the stories fascinating but they are just stories and nothing more.
