By Pooja Kaushal

Being responsible is not a skill but a habit. It is something that has to be nurtured and developed from a young age. The degree and nature of responsibility keeps changing from time to time and with age. A person who accepts these changes and acts accordingly always finds himself in a commanding position. Then, the situation does not rule him but he rules the situation. The question here arises is ‘how to be responsible’?

Since childhood, we are all advised to ‘be responsible’. Elders at home and teachers at school take various measures to help children become responsible adults, but not all turn out to be the same. Within the same family, some children turn out be very responsible, while some become examples of irresponsibility. What is it that rules here? The upbringing is the same yet individuals differ.

6 Tips To Become A Responsible Adult

The genes of a person, basic nature and attitude towards life have a role to play here. Yet with certain tips to be responsible, even an irresponsible person can take steps towards being responsible.

Remember tips only act as guidelines. How responsible you are or are trying to be depends upon how you act and react; read and implement. Following are a few tips that can help you work towards being a more responsible person in life.

Good listener: The more you listen, the more you learn. When you are quiet and your ears are catching all the happenings around you, your experience’s metre goes up. This helps you grow as a person in all respects. Unnecessary talking turns out to be wastage of time.

Value time: One of the most precious things bestowed upon us is time. Time once lost can never come back. You cannot earn it, you cannot borrow it. What you have in hand at that particular moment is what you have, so make maximum use of it. A very important aspect of being responsible lies in valuing and respecting time. A person who respects time is respected by time.

Plan: It could be a massive project in office or a simple daily life schedule of a homemaker. If you have a plan for everything, there will be no misses. Since being responsible is all about fulfilling duties effectively on time, you must know when you are supposed to do what. When you have a plan in place, objectives are achieved without delay and in a hassle-free manner.

Write: Do not tax your brains to remember everything. With so much work on hand, it is quite possible that you miss out something. Pick up a pen and paper and start writing. This is one of the best and easiest ways to guarantee that work is completed on time. How to be responsible? Pen down every task and duty. When you see things in black and white, they register better and have maximum chance of completion.

Review: Writing down tasks, scheduling meetings are all very important and an excellent way of functioning. But the tips to be responsible also say that it is equally important to go back to the plan and review it. How far have you been successful in achieving your goals, in fulfilling your duties and executing your responsibilities?

Patient: Not all jobs get done in the same manner. While some require lots of time, there are others that hardly need minutes for completion. Keep your patience intact. Train yourself to take control over your temper and work with complete patience. A responsible person never acts in haste and maintains a cool head over his shoulders.

Growing up is a natural process. In this process of growing up, it is assumed that one becomes more responsible with time. However, it is not true that all adults are responsible. Being responsible requires a conscious effort and if you try your best, it can become a second nature to you.
