Gone are the days of Captain Jack Sparrow when piracy was limited to the seas and oceans. Now, a pirate can be found way inside the mainland. The appearance has changed and so has the range of operation. In fact, the term piracy that taken a whole new meaning. Instead of an item being snatched, it is a concept or idea that is getting pirated. All famous pirated things ultimately land up in the hands of consumers – some knowingly and some unknowingly.

There are innumerable common things that gets pirated in the market now. When purchasing a good, it becomes important to check for authenticity.

Another aspect of pirated goods is that they come at a cheaper price compared to the original. True, the quality is compromised upon but many people go for these goods as they consider them to be easy on the pocket. However, they overlook the fact that they are denying credit to the original creators of a product. Let us take a look at some of the most common things that get pirated:

Books: Irrespective of people having access to laptops, tablets and e-book readers, the market for printed books never dies out. Realising this fact, the number of pirated books in the market always goes up. The covers will look the same but the paper quality is way too inferior.

Movies: Every type of movie gets an audience. Besides, there are many movies that are only a one-time watch. In such cases, when viewers get the same CD for much less compared to the original, they prefer the pirated ones. Movies can be said to be one of the most famous pirated things. With the internet now easily accessible, they are even available as downloads.

Music: Like movies, music too have a huge rate of piracy. Both in the form of CDs and downloads, it is difficult to monitor the extent to which piracy has crept into this section. Regular checks are conducted and actions taken to control piracy. But the fact that there are customers out there willing to access pirated stuff, the piracy industry gets a boost.

Accessories: Bags, belts, shoes, jewellery and similar stuff are always available in pirated form. As branded items, they cost a huge sum which is not affordable to many. When a similar item in pirated form is made available at a much lesser price, there are many takers. Sometimes, the finish is so good that the difference is difficult to make out.

Apparels: Everyone knows that a branded garment is more expensive than an unbranded one. However, the unbranded ones might be a little low on the quality front. In order to grab a customer, an imitation of a branded garment is floated in the market. It is much more affordable and looks like a branded apparel.

Toys: The toy industry was never more flourishing than now. At the same time, the original branded ones come at whopping prices. In order to avoid huge expenses, parents do not mind spending a little less on a pirated item. The great demand in this segment has brought toys in to the list of famous pirated things.

Software: Software that comes as a free download is easily accessible. These are mostly common ones but what about the more specialised kinds? They are only available as a CD and come fairly expensive. Once again to save money, pirated software is an easy way out.

Game CDs: There are numerous gaming portals which require CDs as well as games that can be played on the PC. It is true that a game does not stay for a long time and interests change very soon. As long as the interest lasts, it is considered more sensible to get a cheaper pirated CD.

Brand logos: Forget products, even brand logos are pirated. On taking a close look, one might be able to find the difference between an original and pirated, but the difference is very subtle. When placed on items, they give a false identity.

Packaged food: One variant of changing lifestyles is the popularity of packaged goods. There are many brands that have gained the confidence of consumers and hence have a loyal following. In order to cash in on this, pirated food items are floated in the market. It is very important to take a good look at the packaging and beware of any kind of piracy.

Piracy is a menace that has crept into the society in various manners. As aware and alert consumers, one should stay away from pirated goods and not encourage them. It is not only illegal to produce pirated goods but also illegal to purchase them.
