How to keep your word?

By Staff

There is only one thing that will make you reliable and dependable to others, keeping your words. Keeping promises and words shows how committed you are with your own life and also to others. A promise is not just few words uttered, but it is the mutual trust your fellow beings have upon each other. Therefore it is important to stick to your words whatever it may happen. Our word is our bond to one another. It is the way we interact and communicate. It is how we share our inner reality with others. It is the bridge between our subjective, inner world of being and the objective, outer world of other people,

places and things.

A man, without his word, is nothing. You should have heard this expression in a variety of ways and permutations, but you probably never gave it any thought. Before promising anything to anyone you should know if you can fulfill your words, if yes then give your word and you must keep your words to not loose your personality before anyone. The same principle follows when you make a promise. When you say, "I promise" or "you have my word," it's a done deal. Only a stupid man would give his word or promise something he knows he can't deliver. Once you fail to keep your words, you may loose the credibility of your words forever. Give your words only when you mean it.

There is no point in giving promises when you know that you can't do it. When you are faced with a situation where you are asked for something, may be a favor, a contact, doing some job etc..., and you know you can't deliver, admit it. Tell them you don't believe in false promises. If, in the end, you can make good on whatever was asked of you, it will only make you look better in the eyes of the other person.

Fulfilling your promises must do 100% of it. If you keep your promise fully and completely without any hint of an excuse or hesitation, you will gain others' respect. You should never back down from your word. If you are in a situation where you have promised something, you do it. When you make a promise to other or say you will do something for them and then you don't keep your word, you are letting others down and hurting your relationships. Keeping your word and following through on your promises helps to reinforce the trust that others have on you. Not keeping your promises will convey the message that you are not serious about the relationship.

If there arises a situation where you can't keep your promise, be honest and say so. It is important that you are up front with the reason you can't keep your word. If you changed your mind and don't want to keep your promise, you need to be honest about it and let the other person know about why you think you made the promise in the first place and why you don't want to keep your word. If you broke a promise because you are forgetful, consider using some of the high tech ways like cell phone reminders, email alerts, pop-up reminders etc... to be reminded of things you said you would do.
