Kingfisher finishes 25 years of association with Derby in Bangalore. Starting in 1988, Kingfisher Derby has gone from an event for a choice few to one of the biggest events on the social calendar of Bangalore. The Kingfisher Derby is all set to take place in the Bangalore Turf Club this Sunday, the 15th of July, However to kick start the event and to commemorate Kingfisher's silver Jubilee at the race course, Nargis Fakhri has here in Bangalore to pick the ‘Starting Stall Draw for Sunday's race.
Kingfisher And Nargis:
This is not Nargis Fakhri's first association with the brand Kingfisher. She was popular as one of the Kingfisher Calendar Girls in 2009 before her debut in Bollywood. Nargis however is new to Kingfisher Derby. She has had just a few brushes with this royal sport in the past and was soaking up all there was to know about horses and racing. Her favourite horse in the lot is Super Storm because she thinks it is a ‘sexy name'. But Machevilism is going be the crowds favourite this year.
The Starting Stall Draw:
The who's who of the Bangalore racing fraternity was present at what is called the Staring Stall Draw for the Kingfisher Derby. Mr. Samar Singh Sheikhawat, senior Vice President of the United Breweries put it in a nutshell, ‘where they finish depends on where they start'. The horse owners, trainers and jockeys came here to pick the lot and see at what position their horses will start from in the Bangalore Turf Club on Sunday. In case of any other Derby it would have been a cold hearted machine (computer) picking the lots by probability. But Kingfisher Derby has always been marked the exuberance and flamboyance of the brand and its owner. The Starting Stall Draw was thus a mega affair along with the fun filled Pre Derby Party.
As Nargis Fakhri Rightly pointed out, ‘Derby is all about dressing up for the occasion'. The fancy hats and the ladies in the lovely dresses are just as much a part of Kingfisher Derby as the betting and the horse racing. In India, horse racing has always been a very royal sport and to play like the Kings, Kingfisher threw a ‘king-size' party on Friday night, 13th of July. Guest of honour Nargis Fakhri was present at the mega celebrations of Kingfisher Derby's silver Jubilee party. Lucky Ali performed at the Pre Derby part and so did a group named Quick Change who did some out of the world acts.
If the party to kick start the Silver Jubilee Kingfisher Derby was so heart racing, we can only imagine how spirits will soar on the 15th of July 2012, in the Bangalore Turf Club were the stallions battle for supremacy.
