Pets are no less than an active member of the family. Besides, they require great degree of care and attention. It is like having a baby in the house that has to be attended to at all ages.

No doubt, Pomeranians can be great companions but maintaining a Pomeranian is also something you should be aware of. It is not that it is very difficult to maintain but you do need to put in effort into owning a healthy and happy pup.

Before we go into tips of maintaining a Pomeranian, it would be helpful to know a little about this super-active dog. Hard to believe but this pint-sized dog is actually a descendant of the big and bulky sled dogs that weigh close to 30 pounds. The present breed of Poms are close to three to seven pounds in weight.

One very distinct feature of this breed is the Pomeranian fur - a soft and fluffy undercoat and a straight and shiny top coat. With so much fur, it is sure to require some bit of grooming. So let us see what we can do towards maintaining a Pomeranian.

IS IT SAFE TO FEED YOUR DOG WITH BONES?

Diet: Diet often depends upon the size of the dog. However, when it comes to maintaining a Pomeranian, do not be fooled by the size. This breed is a highly active one that needs to be well fed to keep it running. Divide the diet into small meals throughout the day. One serving in the morning, one in the afternoon and one in the early evening hours. This way your Pom is always well fed and satisfied.

Dental: Just like humans, dogs need to maintain a good oral hygiene. Make it a point to start checking your Pomeranian’s mouth every week. Check to see that all teeth are healthy and clean. If you start checking the mouth at an early stage, the dog will get used to it. Hence, it will be cooperative during the periodical dental check-up.

Eyes: Always check to see that the eyes are clear and bear no redness. They should be healthy looking and have that little twinkle that they always have. Remember maintaining a Pomeranian is not very difficult but still there is that little bit that you have to do.

Grooming: This could be a little tough task to achieve. Since the Pomeranian has more fur, it requires some extra attention. They do not shed very often, but when they do, care needs to be taken. When brushing the coat, go right upto the inner coat and start from the base. This way you will be brushing both the inner and the outer coat and thereby eliminating chances of missing out any spot. A healthy and shiny coat gives a handsome look to the dog.

Nails: Can you hear the clicking sound on the floor every time your Pomeranian takes a walk? It is time to cut the nails. Long nails can be harmful to you as well the dog. Since dogs are very touchy about their feet, they would not want to let you touch them. To prevent this from happening, start touching and grooming their feet from a young age.

Playtime: All dogs like to play and the Pomeranian is no exception. However, keep this in mind that the size of the Pom is rather small and hence, it gets tired very quickly. Keep workouts small and simple. Always maintain a good stock of toys and keep rotating them to keep the interest alive.

A Pomeranian is a dog that survived the sinking Titanic. It is quite a popular pet for many in the present world. If you too wish to own this joyful and active pup, fulfill your wishes but do take very good care of the Pomeranian.
