Washing Woolen Clothes To Perfection

Winter is around the corner and most of us are taking out our stocked up woollen clothes from our closets. One of the things you would notice is the smell which is emitted from the woollen clothes. Woollen clothes tend to smell in a funny way when they are stored for a long time. The first thing that you should do after you have removed your woollens is to dry it out in the sunlight. Apart from this, there are other ways in which you can wash and care for your woollen clothes before you wear them on.

Needs Sunlight

As mentioned earlier, remove your woollen clothes from the cupboard and store them in the sunlight for a whole day of possible. If not, then a few hours in the sun is a perfect start to care for your woollen clothes.

Warm Water

After drying it out in the sun, fill a bucket of warm water and dip your woollen clothes in it. The water should be free from detergent and should be warm to touch. Let your woollen clothes soak for about 15 minutes.

Drop in Detergent

After the woollen clothes is soaked in the warm water. Drop in a handful of detergent to the bucket, fill half of the bucket with water and then place your clothes in. Using your hands, gently rub the detergent on you woollen clothes and let it soak for 5 minutes. After the set time, throw away the soap water from the bucket.

Use Machine

The soapy woollen clothes should now be transferred to a washing machine. Wash your woollen clothes for about 10 minutes according to time set. After 10 minutes, drain the water and wash again.

For Stains

If your woollen clothes have a stain or two on it, this is the time to remove it. On the stain, place a tablespoon of baking powder, rub the powder in a circular motion on the stain. Repeat the process three times if the stain is stubborn. Other home remedies to remove stains from woollen clothes is lemon juice squeezed over the stain or a drop of alcohol too will do.

Rinse Again

After you have removed the stains, wash your woollen clothes for another 5 minutes in the washing machine. After this, place it in the dryer and time it. When your woollen clothes are dry, place them in the sunlight till it is completely dry.

One tip for woollen clothes: If you want your woolen clothes to smell nice after wash, you can dab a little powder over the wool or you can add a spoon of apple cider vinegar to the water when you are washing your woollen clothes.
