Some of the most common symptoms of depression are extreme hopelessness, loneliness, irritability, aggression, mood swings and suicidal tendencies.
So, here are a few things you must never say to a depressed person!
1. “Just Cheer Up”
People with depression cannot just stop feeling low if you tell them to, because certain chemical changes occur in their brain, which are not in their control!
2. “It’s All In Your Head”
Depression is not an imagined condition, so, saying the above statement would be like you downgrading this serious ailment!
3. “Others Have It Worse”
If you compare the situation of a person who is depressed with others and say that others have it even worse, it will not help the person in anyway. A person's trouble will always be big for him/her.
4. “Let’s Go Out”
Do not force a person with depression to go out with you or do other activities, if they do not feel like, because pressuring them can worsen the symptoms.
5. “Get Over It”
Depression is a health condition, which leads to changes in the brain chemicals, so one cannot just "get over it" and it requires long-term treatment!
6. “You Are Just Seeking Attention”
This is an extremely rude thing to say to a person with depression. Depression would be causing a tremendous amount of pain and conflict to the victim, which no one would want to fake, to gain attention!
7. “You Are So Negative”
People with depression cannot help their symptoms or the way they are feeling, so criticising them can only make things worse!
