Today people have been found to suffer from problems like compulsive overeating, emotional eating, night time eating, addictive eating, binge eating, food addiction, orthorexia nervosa and the list goes on. Eating disorders affect both men and women alike but today we shall discuss eating disorders in men.
Eating disorders in men are caused because of a lot of factors. Eating disorders can happen from low self esteem, from a person wanting to match in an organization or team, stress, injury, having a strong desire to stick out or from wanting to be ideal.
Often men struggling with eating problems possess a desire to control individuals, places and things and once they cannot the eating disorder goes out of control. When an individual fails to accept himself as he is, the person can develop an eating disorder.
While women have been in the news for suffering from eating disorders, a lot of men have been found to be struggling with this disease. However, as men shy away from coming out in the open with this disorder, there is comparatively less data available on men compared to women.
As earlier an eating disorder was classified as a female problem, men found it difficult to come out in the open and get themselves treated because of the social stigma attached to it. However, now many men are coming forward and revealing that they have been a victim of eating disorders.
The most common disorders that men have been found to suffer from are anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa and binge eating disorder.
The first and foremost way that eating disorders in men can be prevented is by recognizing in the very first place that one has an eating disorder. Family members can also be of help here. Understanding that it needs to be treated is the next step.
As men are afraid to come out in the open with eating disorders, family members, friends and relatives should actively involve themselves to get the person treated properly so that he can lead a healthy life.
