7 Things That Lead To A Liver Failure
The largest and the heaviest internal organ of a human body is the liver.
It is a vital organ that is involved in performing hundreds of important bodily functions like the ones concerning metabolism, digestion, removal of toxins, etc. Hence, maintaining a healthy liver is highly imperative.
There are a myriad of factors that can cause a liver disease. These liver diseases will eventually lead to liver failure.

Mostly, the organ is able to repair itself; however, a few factors and conditions can prevent it from doing so. Liver failure happens when the organ is damaged beyond repair and is unable to function properly.
This life-threatening condition is mainly of two types, that is acute liver failure and chronic liver failure.
In acute liver failure, the problem takes months to develop and, on the other hand, chronic liver failure happens over a number of years.

For liver failure, the treatment depends on the level of damage that the organ has suffered. Depending on that, the Doctors may try to save the part of the organ still functioning or in a severe case, the patient may have to go for a liver transplant.
On the occasion of World Liver Day, we've compiled a list of 7 things that could possibly lead to a liver failure. Have a look.
1. Long-Term Alcohol Consumption:
Alchohol is one of the main causes of liver diseases like inflammation, fatty liver and cirrhosis. One of the main functions of the liver is to breakdown food and convert it to energy. So, when liver tries to breakdown alcohol, the cells get damaged. This cell damage can lead to inflammation of the liver. Several research hint to the fact that people who drink more alcohol are more likely to suffer from liver-related problems.
2. Obesity:
Another highly common cause of liver failure is fatty liver disease. People suffering from the medical condition, obesity, have excess amount of body fat, which usually gets accumulated around the organ. Few studies claim that people who are obese are at a higher risk of developing liver damage, which could lead to liver failure.
3. Overuse Of Medications:
Some medications have an adverse effect on the liver and cause damage. Some of the antidepressants, mood stabilisers, when overused, can cause liver damage and other diseases.
4. Diabetes:
Few studies claim that diabetes raises the risk of liver damage by almost 50%. High levels of insulin in the blood is one of the main causes of gain in abdominal weight. This can further cause fatty liver disease and eventually lead to the failure of the organ.
5. Nutritional Supplements:
Excess consumption of nutritional supplements can cause an increase in the production of liver enzymes. That can lead to inflammation and scarring of the organ. It is crucial to review the side effects of the supplements before consuming them.
6. Smoking:
While smoking does not directly affect the liver, it can up people's risk for liver damage dramatically. Harmful chemicals of smoke can cause an irreversible damage to the liver cells.
7. High Salt Intake:
High salt intake increases water retention in the liver and swells it up. This causes liver inflammation and damages the organ. Over a long period of time, this habit can lead to an irreversible damage to the organ.
One must take good care of the liver, as it is crucial for maintaining a healthy body. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle is essential for the proper functioning of liver.
