Spices have been used in Indian foods since ancient times. There are a few spices which when used in moderation have several health benefits.
There is a general misconception among all of us that consumption of spices is bad for our health. Well, this might not be totally true. Consumption of spices in limited amount is actually good for one's health, says Mr Ramasamy Selvaraju, Executive Chef, Taj Vivanta, Bengaluru.
Spices form an important part of Indian foods. It is used everyday by almost every household. These come in varied colour and texture; the health benefits of spices that we use are plenty.

One cannot even think of Indian foods without spices. Spices are being used in our regular food since ancient times. We have been using these common spices or rather seen our mothers using them, but most of us are still not aware that these spices are beneficial for our health.

Most of the teenagers and young adults also have a fear that consuming spices can give rise to pimples on their face, so they tend to avoid it completely. Well, one needs to have it clear in mind that consumption of spices in limited amount is good for one's health too.

1. Basil:
Basil is known for its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and anti-bacterial properties. It helps in fighting viruses that affect the body and also several diseases, with the major being cancer.
2. Garlic:
Garlic is one of the best spices that are known to have several health benefits. It is known for its anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory properties, thus helping to fight several diseases and it also helps to improve blood circulation.
3. Thyme:
Known for its antioxidant and anti-fungal properties, consumption of thyme in moderate quantity helps in fighting fungal infection, cold and cough efficiently.
4. Ginger:
Ginger is one of the widely used spices which are known for their anti-inflammatory properties. It helps in treating nausea, migraine and also helps prevent cancer.
5. Cinnamon:
Cinnamon is one of the best spices that helps in treating cold and cough. Is also helps lower the cholesterol level and blood glucose level.
6. Cardamom:
If you are suffering from a bloated stomach, nausea, constipation and acidity then cardamom helps. It is also known to help in detoxifying the body.
7. Turmeric:
The curcumin content in turmeric has a lot of health benefits. Known for its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties,it helps to boost immunity, treat cough and also helps improve digestion.
8. Chilli:
Though many of us are afraid of having chillies, chillies are actually good for health if consumed in limited quantity. These contain beta-carotene and folic acid that help in treating various forms of cancer as well as heart ailments.
