Healthy lungs are required for a healthy living. But apart from fresh air, healthy eating is also required to have green lungs. This article lists 8 superfoods that help our lungs’ health.

Lungs are key organs for our survival. Our ability to take in the oxygen, which keeps us alive, depends on the health of our lungs.

Lungs affected by polluted air or smoke drastically reduces our life expectancy by leading to several diseases like cancer, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, etc.

T­o­ ensure ourselves clean lungs, we must have a healthy diet, besides inhaling fresh air. And also, we must make sure to exercise daily in order to get rid of the toxins by the process of sweating.

So, here are eight foods that we must include in our diet to have clean and green lungs:

Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties that are helpful in curing several ailments. Garlic has allicin, a powerful antioxidant, which neutralises the free radicals. Garlic thus is expected to work well against asthma.

This doctor fruit is good for people suffering from ailments like asthma. People known to eat between two and five apples had lower risk of suffering from asthma than those who did not, as per a study. Flavonoids in apple, especially the khellin flavonoid, open up the airways.

Carrots have beta-carotene and they also contain antioxidant and help reduce problems like asthma. Preliminary studies have shown that beta-carotene can be converted into Vitamin A in the body to give relief against asthma. Some members of the carotenoid family of phytonutrients (compounds in plant foods) can prevent lung cancer. Beta-cryptoxanthin also protects against lung cancer and pumpkin has the highest concentration of this compound, followed by papaya.

Vitamin C in cantaloupe is a powerful antioxidant that fights free radicals to protect the lungs. Those who consume cantaloupe can keep ailments like asthma at bay. Vitamin C, in fact, can be found in several citrus fruits like orange and grapefruit, and in veggies like broccoli.
