Cholesterol isn’t always bad. Cholesterol can be divided into two categories, namely good and bad cholesterol.

Cholesterol, a fatty acid produced in the liver, is needed by the body to perform many bodily functions. Good cholesterol helps in a proper absorption of the food in the body and formation of hormones.

The cholesterol which accumulates in the arteries, reducing the flow of blood to the heart thereby causing many heart diseases, is categorised as bad cholesterol.

Often, the reasons behind the accumulation of bad cholesterol are a sedentary lifestyle and an unhealthy way of eating, especially junk food.

According to Ayurveda, unhealthy meda dhatu or lipid tissue is the reason behind an imbalanced cholesterol level in the body.

There are several medicines or herbs in Ayurveda that help in balancing cholesterol.

According to Ayurveda, high levels of cholesterol in the body are the result of an impaired digestion. Weak digestion in tissues produces harmful toxins or Ama in the body, which then blocks the arteries.

High cholesterol in the body is the result of excessive waste that is present in the body which blocks the arteries causing further diseases.

Here are some of the Ayurvedic remedies that can help us in lowering our bad cholesterol level without exercising a lot. If you include these regularly, it can help curb the cholesterol issue in the body.

Garlic:

Garlic has long been used in India to add flavours to any dish. However, garlic is also an effective remedy to treat cholesterol. Have two to three cloves every day to alleviate bad cholesterol from the body.

Arjuna:

Also known as Terminalia Arjuna, the bark of Arjuna tree has been used since ages to treat high cholesterol and problems related to the heart. Its beneficial properties help in dissolving bad cholesterol that gets accumulated in the artery, thereby reducing the chances of a heart attack.

Guggulu:

Also known as Commiphora wightii, this Indian herb is a popular remedy in Ayurveda to treat cholesterol. With its lipid-lowering properties, Guggulu is a great herb that can be used to reduce the cholesterol levels in the body.

Tulsi Aka Holy Basil:

Commonly found in Indian homes, Tulsi is one herb that is used for curing an array of ailments such as treating ulcers, boosting immunity and controlling cholesterol levels. Regular usage of tulsi is known to decrease bad cholesterol and increase good cholesterol in the body.

Trikatu:

Combination of pepper, ginger and pippali, Trikatu is used for a variety of ailments in Ayurveda such as decreasing excess fat and fighting away bad cholesterol. Its warming properties help in cleansing the body of Ama (toxins), thereby helping in a better digestion process.

Alfalfa:

Alfalfa is also known as Lusan gaas in Hindi. It is an Ayurvedic herb that is used to cure cholesterol. It contains fibres and other useful chemicals that prevent cholesterol from getting stuck in the arteries. It also helps in lowering LDL (bad cholesterol).

Triphala:

Triphala is a combination of Ayurvedic herbs such as Haritaki, Amala and Bahira, which help in alleviating cholesterol levels in the body. Triphala helps in flushing out toxins and thereby helps in balancing cholesterol.

Turmeric:

Turmeric has been used since ancient times to treat cholesterol levels in the body. It helps in the reduction of bad cholesterol and the blood cholesterol in the body. Due to its anti-inflammatory properties, turmeric is hands on an effective agent to control bad cholesterol in the body.

Coriander:

Coriander is used to add flavour to the food, but consuming it also has benefits if you are suffering from a high cholesterol level. Consuming it daily will help in reducing the toxins that are accumulated in the arteries and also helps in reducing LDL.
