Uric acid is a chemical that is produced when our body breaks down food particles that contain purines, which are organic compounds. Most of the uric acid is dissolved in the blood, filtered through the kidneys and flushed out in urine.

Sometimes, the body produces excess uric acid or is not able to filter out enough of it. This disorder is called hyperuricemia, which occurs when we have too much of uric acid in our body.

Excess levels of uric acid are generally associated with the condition called gout, which is a form of arthritis (deposit of uric acid crystals in the joints). It causes swelling of the joints coupled with pain, especially in the feet.

Increased cell deaths caused by either cancer or treatment for it can also lead to the accumulation of uric acid in our body. High level of uric acid can also lead to kidney ailments and hypertension and cardiovascular disease.

High uric acid can be caused by high-purine diet, excessive intake of alcohol, obesity, underactive thyroid, genetic reasons and other medical conditions.

Natural Remedies To Reduce Uric Acid Level:

You can try the following home remedies to control your uric acid levels. Besides, of course, a proper medical treatment is key.

1. Water:

1. Water:

Drinking sufficient water dilutes the uric acid and stimulates the kidneys to eliminate the excess amount of the acid from the body. Drinking 8 to 10 glasses of water daily reduces your uric acid level. Also, have fruits and vegetables that are rich in water.

2. Avoid A High-Purine Diet:

2. Avoid A High-Purine Diet:

Animal proteins are big sources of purines that increase uric acid level. Meats, fish, poultry, beans, asparagus, etc., have high purine content in them.

3. Lemon Juice:

3. Lemon Juice:

The alkaline effect created by lemon juice neutralises the uric acid. The vitamin C content in this citrus fruit also lowers the uric acid level. Drink a glass of warm water mixed with lemon water on an empty stomach in the morning.

4. Dark Berries:

4. Dark Berries:

They are very helpful in reducing uric acid levels. Purple and blue berries contain flavonoids (anthocyanins) that reduce uric acid level and give relief from inflammation and stiffness. Eating half a cup of berries daily or having their juice for a few weeks will give you the results. Cherries, too, are helpful.

5. Apple Cider Vinegar:

5. Apple Cider Vinegar:

A great detoxifying agent, apple cider vinegar removes waste like uric acid from our body. The malic acid in apple cider vinegar breaks down and gets rid of the uric acid. It also restores the alkaline acid balance in the body. Add a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar with water and drink it thrice in a day.

6. Olive Oil:

6. Olive Oil:

Most vegetable oils do a great harm to our body when heated, as on processed, they turn into rancid fats that destroy the vitamin E present in our body; and this leaves the uric acid level uncontrolled. Use olive oil instead, as it contains monounsaturated fat and has a high vitamin E content and antioxidants. Olive oil is also anti-inflammatory in nature.

7. Baking Soda:

7. Baking Soda:

Another great home ingredient to lower uric acid is baking soda. It makes uric acid more soluble and enables the body to get rid of it easily. Mix half a teaspoon of baking soda in a glass of water and drink up to four glasses of this concoction daily at regular intervals. However, avoid it if you have high blood pressure or hypertension.
