10 Harmful Effects Of Aspirin Overdose
Aspirin can surely be considered as a wonder-drug as it is prescribed for many health problems. But the side effects of aspirin overdose could be adverse and in some rare cases, could also be life-threatening.
Aspirin is a derivative of salicylic acid. It contains anti-inflammatory properties and is efficient in providing relief from fever and pain. That maybe the reason why most of us abuse it as a 'pain-killer'. But, unfortunately there are some effects of taking too much aspirin.
Six Different Ways To Use Aspirin
Aspirin is mainly prescribed for headache, fever, cold, tooth pain, certain types of arthritis and even muscle pains. As it also has blood-thinning abilities, it is also used to prevent strokes and heart attacks. But taking too much aspirin causes dangerous problems which may threaten your life.
What happens when you take too much aspirin? Well, the side effects can be as trivial as dizziness and as dangerous as coma!
Good And Bad Effects Of Aspirin
When we talk about the overdose, we are looking at two types of overdose. If you consume a heavy dose by mistake, it is considered as acute-overdose. But when you have been using this drug since long and if it has accumulated in your body due to improper kidney function/dehydration then it can be considered as a case of chronic-overdose. Well, the symptoms vary in both the cases.
In case of an overdose, the person should be rushed to a hospital as certain treatment methods like dialysis etc., are used to remove the harmful contents from the body. If you are a person consuming aspirin for medical reasons in small but regular doses, ensure that you drink lots of water to keep your body hydrated and avoid the build up of aspirin in your body.
Severe Pain In The Stomach
This is one of the aspirin side effects on stomach. A pain (mild to severe) can be experienced in the stomach. In some rare cases, gastro-intestinal bleeding can also occur.
Fatigue & Fever
The person may feel tired and exhausted with no reason when there is an overdose of aspirin. The body temperature may soar up to an alarming level.
Rapid Breathing & Heart Beat
This is one of the symptoms of chronic overdose. Rapid breathing and/or rapid heart-beat can be observed in the patient.
Nausea And Vomiting
When the digestive system gets affected, the person may experience severe vomiting sensation. In rare cases, even peptic ulcers and hemorrhage can also occur.
Dizziness
Well, dizziness or drowsiness may result due to a large overdose. If such symptoms are ignored, it could be life-threatening to the person.
Cloudy Mind
The person may be in a confused state, unable to think clearly. Some people may even collapse in such a condition.
Seizures
Well, there are several types of seizures and only a qualified doctor can identify the type depending upon the brain activity of the patient. But yes, seizures could include the list of side effects of aspirin overdose.
Hyperactivity
Intense feelings of restlessness could also be one of the effects of taking too much aspirin. If the person is abnormally hyperactive, consulting a doctor immediately is advisable.
Inability To Hear
Chronic overdose may also result in deafness for sometime (a temporary inability to hear any sounds).
