Everyone desires to have a lean and thin body. Various types of diets are gaining popularity, gyms are opening up in every locality and increasing stress is being laid on a healthy lifestyle. Those who have the appropriate weight, aim to maintain it, while those who are overweight, work towards losing the extra pounds.

When aiming for a goal, it would be best to break it up into smaller achievable goals that can add up to the larger one. One way to shed fat would be to aim to lose a pound a week. Shedding 10 pounds might seem to be a large figure but when you look at one pound per week, the task will appear to be much more manageable. It is nothing but a way of fooling the mind but it works.

Although a small goal, it needs the basic ingredient of determination and perseverance. No matter what task you take up, if you do not have that fire in you belly and the willpower to pursue it to the end, the goal will be far from achievable. Exercise: No pain no gain - so goes the saying. And it is quite apt in this situation. If you are all set to lose kgs in weeks, then you need to take up some exercise regime. Initially, the exercise thing may not show results immediately, but do not stop. Losing weight through exercise is the best way to go. There might also be slight body ache if you have started exercising after a long time but that should never be a reason to stop. Continue with the exercise. The pains will go away gradually.

Maintain a food diary: You might think that you know what and how much you eat and yet find no reason to your increasing weight. It might be baffling also. Now, try writing down every bit of food you eat throughout the day. Do not miss out on anything. In fact, never miss out on your snacking bits. You will be surprised to know how much you eat. When you get this snacking in control, a great part of the job will be done.

Breakfast is a must: Always in a hurry and missing out on breakfast? This could be serious injustice to your system. Never miss out on the first and most important meal of the day. Breakfast sets the stage for the day and keeps you charged up. A filling breakfast will last pretty long in your system and keep you energised. This, to a great extent, will prevent you from constant snacking, which contributes to increased weight.

Early dinner: Make it a point to have dinner at least two hours before bedtime. This gives ample time for the food to get digested and prevents accumulation of fat in the body. It would be a good idea to go for a small walk after dinner to aid digestion. And remember never have sweets before bedtime. The sugar does not get time to burn and settles in the body.

Never go hungry: Staying hungry is not a way to lose a pound a week. In fact, it can slow down the metabolism of the body and losing weight can get even more difficult. The idea is to up the metabolism of the body which further helps in shedding off fat.

Have water: When thirsty, what do you have? If it is water, well and good, but if it is some sugar drink, carbonated or non-carbonated, you need to change your habit. Prevent yourself from stocking up useless sugar and glucose. This only leads to more weight gain and a host of other diseases.

Replace refined with whole: Refined grains do taste a lot better than whole grains but when it comes to healthy eating, the whole grains steal the show. Every whole grain has all the parts of the grain, including the husk and the bran. It is a complex carbohydrate which keeps you full longer and provides the digestive tract with the much needed fibre.

Eat rather than juice: When juicing, you are only having the watery part of the fruit and vegetable. Instead go for eating it. Grab a knife and cut the fruit into pieces. Take a fork and chew the fruit. You will get all the fibre as well as the vitamins and minerals present in the fruit.

When you aim to lose a pound a week, you need to take good care of your eating and living habits. It is all a matter of your own health and well-being. Eat wise, exercise and ensure adequate sleep. Your small efforts will pay off in a positive manner.
