Unusual Signs Of Acidity

By Tara Hari

Most people are under the mistaken assumption that acid reflux or acidity is very easy to spot and treat. But a lot of times, the
symptoms of acidity are less than obvious. They are also very easily mistaken for something else, since it is very hard to connect these unusual symptoms to acid reflux or acidity. It is very important to identify acidity and get the right treatment for it.

Acid reflux or acidity is a condition where the food from the stomach goes back up the esophagus. This leads to heartburn. If heartburn is left untreated, it can lead to Barrett's esophagus, which is an antecedent to cancer. Although heartburn is one of the most common symptoms of acid reflux or acidity, it is very important to understand that every person suffering from acid reflux does not have heartburn and not everyone with heartburn has acid reflux. Acidity can be easily treated with some medicine that can reduce the amount of acid made in your stomach.

So let us look at some of the unusual signs of acidity or acid reflux.

Regurgitation

Regurgitation

One of the most unusual signs of acidity is regurgitation. Regurgitation takes place when the stomach contents and acid make their way back up the esophagus, reaches the throat and enters the mouth.

Sore Throat

Sore Throat

It is very easy to mistake a sore throat as a symptom of common cold or flu, but sometimes digestive problems can lead to a sore throat. Sore throats are an unusual sign of acidity, if you only experience them directly after a meal.

Nausea

Nausea

Nausea is another usual sign of acidity that does not usually occur. So next time you feel nauseous after a meal, it might not be because you ate too much, but can be a symptom of heartburn.

Bitter Taste

Bitter Taste

Another unusual sign of acidity is a bitter feeling in your mouth. This is because the acid escaping from your stomach has made its way to the back of your throat. In more severe cases of acid reflux, this results in choking.

Chest Pain

Chest Pain

When the stomach acid enters the esophagus and splashes around, this triggers chest pain. But sometimes the pain is not so fleeting. It lasts longer and has an intensity that exceeds expectation. It is very easy to mistake heartburn as a symptom for heart attack.

More Pain While Resting

More Pain While Resting

If you remain standing up after a meal, gravity plays a part in keeping the food in your stomach. But if you lie down or bend over after a meal, the acid in your stomach is much more likely to escape and enter your esophagus to cause heartburn.

Cough

Cough

A number of respiratory disorders are sometimes unusual signs of acidity. So when there is excessive coughing or wheezing, it can be because of heartburn caused by the acid from your stomach entering your lungs.

Asthma

Asthma

When the coughing and wheezing, caused by heartburn from the stomach acid entering your lungs, escalates and becomes more severe, it can result in or become a trigger for asthma. Here, there is an overlapping between heartburn and asthma.

Trouble Swallowing

Trouble Swallowing

Sometimes, when a person frequently suffers from heartburn or acid reflux, there is a continuous cycle of damage and healing. This will result in scarring which causes a swelling in the lower esophagus tissue. This results in the esophagus becoming narrow and the person having trouble swallowing.

Extra Saliva

Extra Saliva

One of the most unusual signs of acidity is the excess production of saliva inside the mouth. The excess saliva produced could be water brash, which is one of the symptoms of acid reflux. This may be because your body is trying to wash out the irritant present in your
esophagus.
