Health Problems Of Wearing High Heels

By Sudheendra Mudikeri

High heels have been observed since 3500 BC in Egyptian murals depicting the upper crest of the society wearing them. French males used high heels as a stopper to prevent slipping of feet from the stirrups of the saddle during horse riding. The term "well-heeled" which meant the rich and famous of those days came from here.

Evidence points out that the female gender adopted it as a fashion accessory since the sixteenth century. Not just to appear taller, but to also boosts their oomph factor.

Health Problems Of Wearing High Heels

The adult film industry reassured this feeling by making high heels mandatory during onscreen undressing. Pumps, pencil points and other varieties of high heels are flaunted as an unavoidable accessory in this industry.

Body speaks...

Research conducted on effects of high heels reveal incidences of pain in ankles, knees and lower back in significantly large proportions as compared to flat heeled footwear. Common healt problems observed due to extensive usage are pain in the calves and knees due to excessive strain and body weight imbalance.

Pressure on your inner knees due to change in loading pattern may lead to joint degeneration and osteoarthritis. The inconvenience is compounded by the pointed toes coverage area of the frontal portion of the footwear causing ingrown toenails, bunions and toe overlaps.
High heels effects your health as it put you in a highly uncomfortable body position. The Center of Body Mass (CBM) is shifted and requires backward leaning. Those of you who work in sitting or standing postures are also affected by the shift in CBM due to high heels.

You feel good and definitely look curvaceous when your upper body and hips project outward due to high heels. But the end effect might lead you to suffer (and severe ones if slightly overweight) long term pain in the calves to lower back in addition to the ones listed above.

Natural human body and its weight distribution does not favour standing or sitting positions where the heels are at a distance of 2+ inches above the toes. Your appearing taller is an understandable excuse, but definitely not at the cost of health problems especially pain to the entire upper body. Add to it are worries of ingrown toe nails and joint pain.

Commenting on dancing and partying with high heels on, "If you're jumping up and down, you're forcing all your body weight to rest on the balls of your feet which can result in stress fractures and ligament damage," says podiatrist, Dr. Hillary Brenner.

How to avoid health problems due to high heels?

A judicious usage pattern in which hours of minimized daily usage is recommended (max 2 hrs per day). This added with a physical work out regime would help you to remain with your head in the sky while keeping your feet grounded if not physically.

With a little disciplined lifestyle, WELL HEALING is definitely advisable as compared to ILL HEALTH due to HIGH HEELING. You can avoid health problems due to high heels for a long time to come.
