Storing Food To Preserve Nutrition

Why do we work so hard? To earn money and fulfil our basic necessities. And food happens to be the most basic necessity that anyone can have. That is why storing food is something that everyone should learn. We spend so much money on buying and stocking food. But if we do not store it properly the food gets wasted. We must store the food in such a way that the nutrition in it is preserved.

Storing food properly is very important to increase the shelf life of food. These methods should help you stock up in a more healthy way.

Storing Food

Air Tight Containers: When you are storing chopped vegetables for salads, a kneaded dough or any other sensitive food, then you must store it in an air tight container. Vegetables lose nutrients rapidly when they are chopped. So a container that cuts down air supply and is then refrigerated will help keep the vegetables fresh. A dough will lose moisture in the cool temperature of the refrigerator and thus, it should be stored likewise.

Pickled Foods: Some fruits and vegetables are seasonal. They cannot be found all year round. The best example of this is mangoes that come only in summer. You cannot store a crate of mangoes just like that, but if you make mango pickle, then the shelf life of this food can be increased drastically. Salt, spices and a oil based medium are the best preservatives in the world.

Store Away From Heat: Many a times, you would see that foods like ghee (clarified butter) and spices lose their flavour when you store them night next to the oven. The gas oven in your kitchen is a source of sweltering heat that can even denature proteins. To preserve nutrition of delicate food, store them away from the oven

Store In Parts: Usually when we buy the week's supply of meat, we store it all together. Every time we ant to make a meat preparation, we thaw the entire amount and use only a part of it. The rest of the meat goes back into the freezer. This is very bad from the perspective of preserving nutrition. Storing the food in parts will ensure that you thaw only one portion of the meat at once.

Do Not Refrigerate Everything: Just because you have a big refrigerator and you think that it will preserve the food, do not stuff everything into it. There are some foods that lose their freshness in the refrigerator. For example, bread and other baked products lose moisture quickly in the chilled temperatures. They become hard and inedible.
