Women are the ones who face the maximum health issues, be it menstrual problems, ovaries or the breast-related issues. One of the main breast issues women of today face, apart from cancer, is nipple problems. According to experts, nipple problems can occur in men or women, shocked?

The main cause for nipple problems is the illnesses starting in your body or the irritants in the environment you're surrounded with. Research shows that most of the nipple problems that women face today are not related to breast cancer; therefore, this is a sign of relief.

However, it is also important for you not to ignore any of these nipple problems, since they could indicate a serious underlying condition that has to be looked into at the earliest, by a specialist. Nipple problems, including those involving the milk ducts, can develop in men as well. Therefore, this article is a must read for men too.

Now, you may wonder what is the main cause or causes behind these nipple problems?

The medical conditions that 'could' cause these nipple health issues are mainly infections in the breast tissue, benign (noncancerous) tumours, hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), pituitary gland tumour and, in rare cases, it could also mean that you have developed the Paget's disease of the breast.

However, in older women, nipple discharge is a common problem, especially after pregnancy. So, let's take a look at some of these nipple problems that women suffer from:

Extra Nipples:

This is one of the rarest of breast problems that is witnessed by both men and women. Extra nipples are not formed like the regular nipples and, in most situations, this nipple causes no harm to your health.

Hairy Nipples:

If you develop hair around the nipple, it is a clear indication that you are suffering from polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It is best to get an abdominal scan done to get this treated at the earliest. Hairy nipples are not alarming and the hair can be removed with the help of tweezers.

Inverted Nipples:

If all your life your nipples have been inverted, it is nothing to worry about, as it is a common problem that is seen in most women. However, if your nipples have never been inverted, it could be a sign of a cancer underneath it, so you should see your doctor straight away.

Scaly Nipples:

If your nipples are itchy, scaly and cracked, it is probably a sign of eczema. This skin problem is nothing to worry about and it can be treated successfully with the help of a cream. It is suggested that one should avoid itching the infected area, as it could lead to further damaging of the skin and, in some cases, a skin infection too.

Nipple Discharge:

Nipple discharge is a common problem witnessed in women who have had children. However, one of the most dangerous nipple problems is when the fluid that is excreted is bloodstained, as it can be a sign of breast cancer. In such cases, it is best to seek medical help to clear all signs of a breast cancer.

Nipple Sores:

It is said that 90 percent of the women have this nipple problem, in which the nipples turn sore and very sensitive to touch. This minor and non-alarming breast problem usually worsens at the time of periods and during menopause. However, if you notice redness in the area along with abnormal skin discolouration, seek medical advice immediately.

Signs Of Nipple Problems:

It is also best to look into the signs or symptoms of nipple problems. Redness on the breast skin, rash, abnormal acne, lumps and skin discolouration are some of the nipple problem signs that you should not ignore.
