7 Best Foods For Dengue Patients
Dengue fever falls under chronic illness category. Patients diagnosed with dengue, if left untreated or lately diagnosed, can lose their life. It is a viral infection caused due to mosquito bite.
As per global statistics, dengue fever is prevalent worldwide but highest number of dengue cases is recorded in Asian continent, India being on top of the list. Approximately, hundred million dengue fever cases so far are recorded globally.

Sudden high fever, joint pain, pain behind eyes, headaches, nausea & vomiting are common symptoms of dengue fever. Till date, no vaccine is found out but generally treated with allopathic medicines like Paracetamols, Analgesics etc.
Since it’s a fatal disease, patients having dengue fever symptoms should be admitted to hospitals immediately for quick and effective treatment. Along with medicines, doctors recommend a strict diet for dengue patients for speedy recovery.
Dengue treatment requires heavy doses of medicine and at the same time food is taken in lesser quantity which makes patients very weak. Nevertheless, it’s a moment of relief that this fatal disease can be cured with proper care and immediate treatment.
Care should be taken while selecting foods for dengue patients as those foods should be easily consumable and digestible. This is because dengue effects the liver of a person and because of weak liver condition, it becomes difficult for the body to digest food easily.
Diet for dengue patients generally includes lot of fluid intake, green vegetables and proteins. Some of the recommended food inclusions are-
1. More Fluid Intake
Maximum intake of fluid is the first thing to include in diet for dengue patients. It's advisable to include nutrient rich fluids apart from liquids such as ORS, sugar cane juice, tender coconut water, lime juice, fresh orange juice and various fruit juices. Drinking plenty of fluids helps in removing toxins from the body.
2. Diet rich in protein
Dairy products, eggs, chicken, and fish are highly recommended foods for dengue patients to combat the dengue virus. Proteins should be included in the diet once the fever subsides slowly as protein rich diet helps in quick recovery and helps regaining the lost nutrients essential for body.
3. Papaya acts as Traditional Medicine
Many times, people in remote areas rely on traditional medicines or home remedies to cure many diseases. Juice extracted from papaya leaf is one such example which is known to be very effective natural cure for dengue fever
4. The Vegetarian diet
After fluid intake, most important additions in diet for dengue patients are almost all sorts of vegetables, particularly the fresh leafy vegetables. Care should be taken not to overcook the vegetables to keep the nutrients intact.
5. No spicy and oily food
Spicy and oily foods are a big no for patients recovering dengue fever. Not only such food becomes difficult for digestion, fever might get aggravated too.
6. Include soups and boiled food
Patients suffering from dengue generally don't like to eat much solid food. In such cases, mild soups can be included so that vitamins, minerals, protein levels are maintained. If required, mashed boiled food can be given with little seasoning.
7. Tea with Ginger
Lastly, one of the effective foods for dengue patients is tea mixed with aromatic medicinal herbs. Ginger tea being most effective due to its various medicinal properties.
