Immediate Home Remedies For Migraine

By Pooja Kaushal

A slight pain starts originating in one eye and gradually, the pain spread to one side of your head. In a couple of hours, the pain is so bad that you find your eyes watering and concentrating on a job becomes near to impossible.

These are some of the symptoms that accompany a migraine attack. While some of us head for a painkiller, there are others who turn to immediate home remedies for migraine pains. Whichever suits at that moment of time is the best step.

Immediate Home Remedies For Migraine

The reasons as to why a person gets a migraine attack is not yet clear. We can say that this is a very customised condition that affects different people differently. For some people, the attack is short-lived and certain medications can bring about instant relief from migraine pain. For some, it is a splitting headache that makes life hell for a couple of days.

Actual causes resulting in a migraine attack are unknown but there are some theories that talk about changes in diameter of blood vessels in the brain. Others indicate a relation between the estrogen levels and a migraine attack. This could be one reason why women are more prone to migraines as compared to men.

Over-the-counter painkillers rarely provide any kind of relief from this discomfort. And since it varies from person-to-person, it is not necessary that one particular medication will cure all. What we can better do is turn toward immediate home remedies for migraine.

Know your pain: No two people have the same kind of migraine. Yours is exclusive to you and only you can understand it. Before taking up any medication regime, try to understand your migraine. You could consider things like what you had eaten, what time of the day it started, which part of the head was affected first, amount of water you had. Basically, try to do a recap of every detail in the past one day. Better still maintain a diary and try to look for any specific pattern. If you spot any similarity between the attacks, you will be able to catch the culprit. This may also help you prevent attacks in future.

Remain hydrated: Many people suffering from migraine have noticed that when water intake is low, a migraine attack possibility rises. It is important to take care of yourself and remain hydrated, especially when out in the hot summer weather. If you are suffering from an attack, try increasing fluid consumption. This can also help bring things under control.

Caffeine: This could work for you or against you. It all depends upon the person. For some people, a cup of coffee can trigger a migraine attack, while for others it can serve as an instant relief from migraine pain. Know your pain and act accordingly.

Sleep: This could be one of the best things you could do to get relief. Although it is not one of the immediate home remedies for migraine, a sound sleep for a couple of hours can bring immediate relief.

Exercise: A physically active body is less likely to suffer from illnesses and the same goes in the case of migraine. Since the cause of the attack is not known, one cannot say that this is a cure. But what is certain is that exercise can tone the body and keep diseases at bay.

Essential oils: Natural therapy in the form of essential oils can help bring about relief. Try applying oils like lavender, peppermint or basil. Certain aromas act differently on different people. One of these could be helpful for your condition.

Massage: A good head massage has always brought comfort from a headache. Same could be the case with migraine. Get an oil that suits you and give your head a good pampering massage. You never know it could be your saviour.

The ‘cures’ mentioned here are not really cures as one would call them but more of a preventative step. We do not know what actually causes migraine and this makes it difficult to look for a cure. The best we can do is understand the circumstances leading up to it and act accordingly. And this in itself can serve as an instant relief from migraine pain.
