Honeymoon Cystitis
Honeymoon cystitis is a very common vaginal infection. The name sounds interesting, doesn't it? Well this urinary infection in women gets its name from the fact that there are higher incidences of its occurrences among newly married woman. Now a urinary tract infection for women is a pretty common ailment even otherwise but this particular condition is associated with either having sex for the first time or sexual intercourse with a new partner. Since the second option has become more acceptable only in last few decades the name 'Honeymoon Cystitis' still harks back to the time when the honeymoon indeed was the time to lose your virginity!

Symptoms of Honeymoon Cystitis:

  • An urge to urinate frequently, even when your bladder is empty.
  • Burning sensation in the urinal opening.
  • Pain in the lower abdomen
  • Itching sensation in the entire groin due to persistent 'wetness'
  • There might even be some bleeding while peeing.

Why does Honeymoon Cystitis occur so frequently?

1. When you make love for the first time, in most women the hymen breaks. Now when there is a wear and tear of skin tissues, there is always a scope for vaginal infection. On top of that the tendency to have sex for a newly married couple will be more.

2. There is also a little bleeding and blood always attracts infections. Moreover the vaginal opening is very tight in a virgin woman. This causes more abrasion making matters worse for the woman suffering from urinary infection.

3. If you are having this problem with a new partner then your problem is different. Some bacteria is always present in the vagina. In your case this bacteria is being pushed up to the urinary tract and bladder during intercourse. This means that your body has not yet adjusted to the new partner.

How to Cure Honeymoon Cystitis?

  • Firstly, drink lots and lots of water, fluids, juices; anything to flush out the infection. This is a common therapy to cure all urinary infections in women and it works without fail.
  • Urinate immediately before and immediately after sex. Very unromantic idea but necessary! You need to keep your bladder empty during intercourse so that the bacteria cannot travel via the medium of our own urine. Especially urinating after sex helps clear the urinary tract easily.
  • Give your body some time to adjust to the change. Be it a physical relationship for the first time or a new relationship, your body need time to accept the change. With time things will improve.
  • Maintain stringent personal hygiene. Wash yourself with antiseptics every time you take a leak.
  • If your condition is serious, meaning the symptoms don't subside even after 5 days, then visit a doctor immediately. You may be prescribed antibiotics the doses of which will depend on the severity of the infection.
