Which is Healthier: Fruit Juice Or Fruits?

By Bhadra Kamlasanan

Most people don't make a distinction between eating fruits and drinking fruit juices - they feel they get the same amount of nutrition from having a fruit whole or drinking its juice. But there is a major difference, which is the amount of fibre in whole fruits when compared to fruit juices.

If you depend on canned or packaged fruit juices, here is something that will take you by shock: canned or packaged fruit juices have a very little percentage of real fruit.

That is precisely why some fruit juices do not even taste even remotely like a fruit. Without much fibre in your body but sugar, there is nothing that you would gain out of drinking fruit juices.

Fruits Or Fruit Juice

Even if you were to make you own fruit juices at home, know that much of the nutrients is lost when a whole fruit is squeezed to produce juice. Read on to know if fruits or fruit juices is the healthier choice.

Fruits vs Fruit Juices:

Fruit Juices Have Lots Of Sugar
If you take a few ml of fruit juice, you will find at least a couple of spoons of sugar in it, which in the long run can be harmful to your health. With so much sugar spurting in your body, you will experience a sudden burst in energy that will immediately drop, causing fatigue, irritability and lethargy.

Fruit Juices get Absorbed Too Fast
More reasons to pick fruits over fruit juice: A diet and obesity research by the Medical Research Council's Human Nutrition Research Unit in Cambridge disclosed the existence of nothing even remotely close to a "nutritious" fruit juice. This, the lead researcher of the study said, was because fruit juices get absorbed too soon by the body and by the time it reaches the stomach, the body just would not know whether the liquid was a soft drink or fruit juice.

Fruit Juices Ruin Your Weight Loss Goals
Imagine that you are given an orange and a glass of smoothie that has 4 oranges in it. Would you feel less hungry after eating the fruit or post drinking the smoothie? Experts would say the first because eating a fruit increases one's possibility of feeling full compared with drinking it. So, all that drinking a smoothie of 4 oranges offers is a lot of sugar.

Should Fruit Juice Be Completely Proscribed?
Whether the amount of fruit juice that you drink will have favourable effects on your body or not depends on how you consume it. A fruit juice that has been produced after ripping the fruit off its fibrous content and other major nutrients is just a glass of concentrated sugar that completely lacks those supportive nutrients that help in the process of digestion and metabolism. Therefore, it can be said that eating a fruit is healthier than drinking fruit juices.

Therefore, it is very easy for someone to consume large number of calories by consuming just one glass of fruit juice even without getting the nutrition that you think you will get. It may seem inspiring to look at packaged fruit juices with "low-in-fat" flashing across the package, but it is for us to realise that this is deceiving. Better still, you must always look at the rear of the bottle or jar and check the different ingredients that went into the manufacturing of the product. You are most likely to find that the real fruit does not even remotely fit anywhere.

So, which one would you now prefer for your breakfast: fruits or fruit juices? We suggest, eat a fruit and pack more nutrients.
