Tamil Rasam Recipe Without Readymade Powder

Rasam is one item on the Tamil menu without which the food remains incomplete. It is a thin soup made of tomatoes and tamarind which is a great appetizer and is just right if you want to have something light for your meals. Rasam is easy on your stomach and helps in digestion. It tastes even better when you are down with a cold. The bright colour, sharp taste and a nice spicy aroma is enough to tickle your taste buds and leave you wanting more.

Tamil rasam recipe has many variations like the garlic rasam, pepper rasam, mango rasam etc. Each of them is prepared using a special mix of spices which is known as the rasam powder. This powder is readily available in the market. However in case the rasam powder is not available, do not worry because here is a recipe which helps you to prepare the same tasty rasam without the rasam powder. This quick Tamil rasam recipe is easy to prepare and your kids will definitely love it.

Tamil Rasam Recipe Without Readymade Powder

So, try this Tamil rasam recipe without ready-made rasam powder.

Ingredients

  • Tomato- 2
  • Tamarind- 2
  • Coconut- 1/2 cup
  • Green Chilly- 2-3
  • Turmeric powder- 1tsp
  • Hing(Asafoetida)- a pinch
  • Pepper powder- 1tsp
  • Jeera(cumin)- 2tbsp
  • Mustard seeds- 1tsp
  • Curry leaves- 5-6
  • Coriander leaves- 10 stems (finely chopped)
  • Ghee- 1tsp
  • Salt- as per taste
  • Water- 4-5 cups

Procedure

  1. Soak the tamarind in warm water and extract the juice with your hands.
  2. Grind the coconut, jeera and green chillies together in a mixer and keep it aside.
  3. Wash and cut the tomatoes in quarters. Boil it along with the tamarind pulp for 5 minutes. Once it cools mash the tomatoes to release the juice.
  4. Now add turmeric powder, pepper powder, hing and salt. Mix well with half cup of water.
  5. Heat ghee in a pan and add mustard seeds. Once the seeds start crackling, add the curry leaves.
  6. Now pour the tomato and tamarind mixture along with 4 cups of water in the pan and bring it to boil.
  7. Once it starts boiling, add the prepared coconut paste and cook on low flame for 2 minutes.
  8. Now switch off the flame and garnish the rasam with chopped coriander leaves.
  9. Serve it with hot rice and papads.
