Dal Tadka: Famous Indian Recipe

Dal tadka is a famous dish very well liked in India. This dal tadka recipe is your perfect companion for hot tandoori roties. But you can easily replicate it in the privacy of your home with this easy dal tadka recipe. It is basically a toor dal recipe that is spicy and rich in all flamboyance of Indian cuisine.

Dal tadka is an easy Indian recipe but involves a specific skill set in making. All the taste of this toor dal recipe is dependent on the last bit of tempering or 'tadka'. If you master the skill of giving a 'tadka' to the dal then you are home and if not then you are will have just another so so dish of dal. Beware as the strong smell of the tempering that will burn your nostrils and make you cough. Keep the exhaust fan on and cover your nose with a napkin.

Dal Tadka: Famous Indian Recipe

Ingredients For Dal Tadka Recipe:

1. Toor or Arhar dal 1 cup
2. Onion 1 (chopped finely)
3. Tomato 1 (chopped finely)
4. Garlic 4 cloves (chopped finely)
5. Coriander leaves (few)
6. Dry Red chilli 3
7. Green chillies 2 (chopped finely)
8. Cumin seeds 1 tablespoon
9. Cumin powder 1 teaspoon
10. Red chilli powder ' teaspoon
11. Bay leaf 1
12. Asfoetida or Hing 1 teaspoon
13. Ghee 2 tablespoons
14. Salt as per taste.

Procedure For Dal Tadka:

  • Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in the pressure cooker until it crackles.
  • Add cumin seeds and the bay leaf to it. Let it get singed.
  • Now add the finely chopped onions and garlic to the crackling ghee. Mix and let the onions turn golden brown.
  • Meanwhile wash the toor dal and keep aside.
  • Add the chopped tomato, green chillies and salt after it so that it melts quickly.
  • Now pour in the dal and 3 cups of water in the cooker. Close the lid and wait for 3 whistles to pass.
  • For tempering or tadka, heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a small steel bowl. Hold the bowl over the flame with the help of a pliers.
  • Add the dry red chillies, cumin powder, red chilli powder and hing to it. Let it singe for a 30 seconds and pour it over the boiled dal.

You can garnish dal tadka with freshly chopped coriander leaves before serving.
