Janmashtami Fasting Recipes

Janmashtami is celebrated in every corner of the country. This Hindu festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. There are different ways of celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. For example, Dahi Handi is a very popular way of celebrating Janmashtami in Maharashtra. In northern states of India, the images of baby Krishna are showcased with lots of decoration and plays.

Janmashtami fasting or vrat is a very popular practice among Lord Krishna devotees. The devotees of Krishna fasts whole day to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. They also chant His name whole day, and fast to remove impurities from body, mind and soul.

Also known as Janmashtami vrat, fasting is observed for 24 hours by devotees of Lord Krishna. During Janmashtami fasting, people either eat fruits or do not eat anything and survive just on water till they offer prayers at midnight.

If you are observing Janmashtami fast, then you need to eat very selected foods. Kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour), singhara ka atta (water chestnut flour), and vrat ke chawal (barnyard millet) are among the widely prepared Janmashtami fasting foods. Moreover, rock salt (sindha namak) is used instead of the normal sea salt. If you are doing Phalahar vrat, you can eat fruits and sweets with milk or fruit juice before sunset.

Here is a list of the Janmashtami fasting recipes that you can prepare on this auspicious day. You can eat few dishes like lassi, kalakand, peda before sunset. The main course dishes should be consumed after the midnight Janmashtami puja.
