Janmashtami Fasting Recipes
Janmashtami is celebrated in every corner of the country. This Hindu festival marks the birth of Lord Krishna and is celebrated with great enthusiasm. There are different ways of celebrating the birth of Lord Krishna on Janmashtami. For example, Dahi Handi is a very popular way of celebrating Janmashtami in Maharashtra. In northern states of India, the images of baby Krishna are showcased with lots of decoration and plays.
Janmashtami fasting or vrat is a very popular practice among Lord Krishna devotees. The devotees of Krishna fasts whole day to celebrate the birth of Lord Krishna. They also chant His name whole day, and fast to remove impurities from body, mind and soul.
Also known as Janmashtami vrat, fasting is observed for 24 hours by devotees of Lord Krishna. During Janmashtami fasting, people either eat fruits or do not eat anything and survive just on water till they offer prayers at midnight.
If you are observing Janmashtami fast, then you need to eat very selected foods. Kuttu ka atta (buckwheat flour), singhara ka atta (water chestnut flour), and vrat ke chawal (barnyard millet) are among the widely prepared Janmashtami fasting foods. Moreover, rock salt (sindha namak) is used instead of the normal sea salt. If you are doing Phalahar vrat, you can eat fruits and sweets with milk or fruit juice before sunset.
Here is a list of the Janmashtami fasting recipes that you can prepare on this auspicious day. You can eat few dishes like lassi, kalakand, peda before sunset. The main course dishes should be consumed after the midnight Janmashtami puja.
Vrat Special Aloo Ki Sabzi
This is a special aloo ki sabzi that can be prepared for Krishna Janmashtami vrat. It contains sindha namak and no onions and garlic.
Sabudana Ki Khichdi
Sabudana is widely used for preparing many dishes for Janmashtami fasting. This khichdi is easy to prepare and gets digests quickly.
Kalakand
Lord Krishna has a fetish for sweet dishes especially the ones that are prepared with milk. Kalakand is a soft sweet dish that is made with khoya.
Kesar Peda
The soft and filling kesar peda can be teamed up with a glass of milk. It controls appetite and also helps you stay active whole day while fasting.
Kuttu Ka Paratha
Phalahar fasting during Janmashtami is broken with kuttu ka paratha. It can be teamed up with vrat ki aloo sabzi.
Mango Lassi
Lassi keeps you full, hydrated and active for a long time. If you are fasting on Janmashtami, try this recipe.
Sabudana Kheer
Sweet dishes like sabudana kheer can be prepared on this day. It is a Janmashtami fasting recipe that can be used as Bhog too.
Singhara Ka Halwa
Singhara ka halwa is prepared with singhara atta and sugar. It tastes delicious and is a popular Janmashtami fasting sweet recipe.
Aloo Jeera
This is a main course side dish that can be teamed up with kuttu ka paratha. It is also prepared with rock salt.
Boondi Raita
Boondi raita is a crunchy and delicious recipe that is very popular side dish in India. For Janmashtami, add rock salt and avoid onions in it.
Cucumber Raita
Cucumber raita is a delicious recipe that has a blend of sour yogurt and crunchy cucumber pieces. Mix this raita with spices like cumin seeds, red chilli powder and rock salt.
Gopalkala
Gopalkala is a popular dessert recipe that is named after Krishna. It is offered to the deity as bhog. This sweet dish can be consumed only after the Janmashtami puja.
Rabri
Rabri is an ideal recipe for Janmashtami. It is prepared with milk and can be served in the plate while breaking the Phalahar fast.
